Kicking the butt is perhaps one of the best decisions you will have made in life – in fact you will now prolong your very life! So, cheers to that. Now, the next and very crucial step is to cleanse your body of the toxins that  have built up over the years. We’ll tell you how you can do a natural lung detox at home by making changes to your diet, using herbal remedies, and kick-starting a lifestyle that’s great for your body as well as your mind. Let’s get started!

How to Do an At-home Lung Detox

1) Foods to Heal and Restore

Ayurveda regards food (the right kind of food!) as medicine. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices and herbs contain the antioxidants, minerals and vitamins your body needs to heal itself. To clear lungs naturally you’d need truckloads of antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids, foliate, magnesium and other such substances found in food.

So, here’s a list of what to eat:

  • Orange and red fruits like carrots, oranges and pomegranates
  • Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage
  • Citrus fruits like lemons and grapefruit
  • Foliate rich food like lentils and spinach
  • Pineapples and apples
  • Berries
  • Ginger, garlic and turmeric
  • Honey
  • Nuts like almonds

Water is hands down crucial during any lung cleanse. So make sure you drink 80 ounces every day – warm, not cold.

On the other hand, avoid:

  • Dairy
  • Alcohol
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Caffiene
  • Processed food
  • White sugar
  • All kinds of junk food

2) Healing With Herbs

A herbal lung cleanse can be as relaxing for the mind as it is purifying for your body. Some herbs you can use are :

  • Mullein
  • Eucalyptus
  • Licorice root
  • Indian Tobacco
  • Coltfoot
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme

Herbs like these can be consumed, inhaled or applied topically. How do they work? They possess various medicinal properties that clear your chest, kill viruses and bacteria, soothe your throat, help digestion and reverse the effects of smoking. However, consult an Ayurvedic doctor regarding which herb suits your unique body and the amount which is safe as well as helpful for you.

3) Lifestyle for a Better Body and Mind

In addition to food and herbal remedies, you should dedicate a certain amount of time each day to activities that support a smooth lung detox.

First and foremost is breathing. Pranayama is an Ayurvedic practice that is extremely effective in restoring the health of your lungs while at the same time help your body purify itself. From a trained practitioner learn alternative nostril breathing.

Equally important are exercise and meditation,  which will cleanse and strengthen your body and mind. Depending your dosha and the severity of your toxin load, you could do specific yoga poses and activities like jogging or swimming. Ayurveda recognises the varying body-mind constitutions. Based on these types, more relaxing or rigorous exercises are deemed suitable. In other words, walking might suit you, while running might suit another. So the best person to tell you which exercise fits your lung detox routine is of course your Ayurvedic doctor.

Meditation, done for even 20 minutes a day, will go a long way in helping you to stay stress free and healthy –  inside out. When you are stress free, your body will much faster and easily be able to spring back to a state of good health.

Team Ayurvedum wishes you a happy lung detox!!
