Deliciously flavourful, garlic is a herb you simply cannot ignore. It has long been used in Ayurveda for its medicinal benefits. Over the years, several studies have discovered its immense health value too. Here are the benefits of eating garlic.

Benefits Of Eating Garlic

1. Immunity

This Ayurvedic herb boosts immunity rather well. It boosts the levels of cells that fight off infection, increases blood circulation, and supplies the body with much-needed nutrients to stay strong like vitamin C, manganese, and selenium. If you are prone to catching colds during the winter, add garlic to your diet. It significantly reduces the chances of falling sick.

2. Diabetes

Next among the benefits of eating garlic is lower blood glucose levels. Garlic has been found to control blood sugar as well as help manage the symptoms of diabetes. This herb can reduce blood cholesterol too – something those with diabetes can benefit immensely from. More on that later in the article.

3. Digestion

Garlic is popular in Ayurveda as a digestive herb. Traditionally, it has been added to food to increase its digestibility. Garlic has been found to treat digestive problems too, such as diarrhoea and dysentery. It’s excellent at helping get rid of harmful bacteria from the gut. Simply add a few garlic cloves to your food for improved digestion.

4. Infections

For ages, garlic has been used as a folk remedy that disinfects the body. If you’re down with a common cold, eating garlic can be a great way to help you recover faster. That’s because garlic has potent antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. It can also be used as an antiseptic for wounds, and it promotes healing.

5. Cholesterol

Better cholesterol control is now well-known among the garlic benefits. This herb contains allicin, a compound that reduces the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. What’s more, it also prevents the build up of plaque in the arteries. But of course, it’s important to include it in an overall cholesterol management plan. Here are some cholesterol lowering juices you could try making at home.

6. Blood pressure

In addition to cholesterol, garlic reduces blood pressure too! Again, the compound allicin is to thank – it relaxes the blood vessels. It also prevents blood cells from sticking together. This is known as platelet aggregation. By doing so, it improves the circulation of blood throughout the body. By reducing both cholesterol and blood pressure, garlic does a whole lot to protect your cardiovascular system from a range of diseases.

7. Cancer

Garlic is packed with antioxidants, making it a great food to prevent cancers of the pancreas, stomach, and breast. This is possible since garlic has powerful antibacterial properties. It can prevent substances from leading to cancer, boost the rate of DNA repair, as well as kill harmful cells. Here is a list of 7 powerful anti cancer foods you can include in your diet.
