  • 2. Pitta Dosha: Fire + Water
  • 3. Kapha Dosha: Earth + Water

The system of Ayurveda is based on the fact that the 5 elements make up everything in the Universe – space, air, fire, water, and earth. Each one of us has these elements, but in different proportions. Two elements combine to form each dosha. Your dosha decides everything about you: your body, mental characteristics, likes as well as dislikes, predisposition for certain illnesses…the list goes on.

Ayurveda is the holistic science of human life. It recognises that you are different from others – you have a unique mind as well as body. And it believes that balance is the key to physical, mental as well as emotional wellness. So, you need to understand your dosha well.

The 3 Dosha Types In Ayurveda: The Basic Ayurveda Concept

1. Vata Dosha: Air + Space

Air and space form Vata. It governs things like blood circulation, respiration, as well as gases. It also controls communication and therefore, the nervous system.

The Vata Body Type

Vata people have a thin body frame. They can be either too tall or too short. Their skin tends to be rough and dry. Their features can also be thin. They have cold hands as well as feet. Their appetite is rather irregular and digestion easily disturbed.

Personality

They are sharp, sensitive, creative, enthusiastic and intuitive. They find it pretty easy to be flexible, but hard to maintain routines. Vata people learn fast but forget easily. They love change as well as self-transformation.

Signs Of Imbalance

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling lost or ‘spaced out’
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Excess gas
  • Dryness as well as dehydration
  • Joint pain
  • Malnourishment
  • Breathing problems

Here’s an entire article dedicated to understanding and balancing Vata.

2. Pitta Dosha: Fire + Water

Fire and water form Pitta. It controls transformative processes in the body like digestion as well as temperature regulation.

The Pitta Body Type

Pitta people have a medium build. They’re agile and athletic. They tend to sweat easily and their skin can get Sunburned pretty soon. They have strong digestion and a regular appetite.

Personality

Pitta people have extremely sharp minds. They have high ambitions and enjoy competition – although they sometimes take it too seriously. They find it rather easy to focus and assert their influence. On the other hand, they get restless, judgmental, and agitated quite quickly.

Signs Of Imbalance

  • Excess anger and aggression
  • Inflated ego
  • Critical
  • Hypertension
  • Acne
  • Acidity
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Loose bowels
  • Burning in the body
  • Dehydration

Here’s an entire article dedicated to understanding and balancing Pitta.

3. Kapha Dosha: Earth + Water

Earth and water form Kapha. It controls growth and stability – immunity, hydration, and structure.

The Kapha Body Type

Kapha people have a heavy build, and wide features like thighs, chest, and shoulders. They have high body strength and strong immunity. Their hair tends to be thick and voice soft. They can suffer from excess phlegm and sluggish digestion.

Personality

Kapha folks are the calmest of the three. They are grounded, forgiving stable, and hard to irritate. They remember extremely well. But they learn slowly, find it hard to break routine, and tend to get attached to people and things.

Signs Of Imbalance

  • Obesity
  • Excess mucous
  • Cold
  • Depression
  • Lethargy
  • Excess sleep and difficulty in waking up
  • Breathing issues
  • Overpossessiveness
  • Sluggish digestion

Here’s an entire article dedicated to understanding and balancing Kapha.

In Conclusion…

While most people have either one or two dominant doshas , some also have imbalances in all three. Ayurveda calls this ‘Tridosha’.

The aim of Ayurveda is to bring you to a state of balance. It leads you to mental, physical, as well as emotional wellness. How is this done? By pacifying your dosha. How does it begin? Understanding it. Congratulations, you just took the first step!
