Ayurveda says “you are what you eat”. Foods we eat influence both our physical and mental health. With our modern lifestyles we end up consuming food items that can adverse affects on our body.

Below are the common white foods we all consume but that should be called poison as during the course of refining and processing they get loaded with toxins and chemicals and there hardly remains any nutritional content:

    1. White Sugar,
    2. White Salt,
    3. White Flour, and
    4. White Rice.

If you having been consuming white rice 5 times every week then you have 17% more chances of getting diabetes. These white foods contain high amounts of refined carbohydrates that are a result of processing and transformation of food items. They contain a lot of empty and unsatisfying calories that affect blood sugar and cholesterol levels. They make the body fatty and lethargic, and increase the risk of diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases.

The reason why Ayurveda recommends avoiding these white foods is because they aggravate the Vatta dosha. It is the one that governs your mind and bodily movements. Vatta dosha is also considered as the leader of the three Ayurvedic principles of the body. It’s imbalance alone is responsible for 80 out of the 140 known diseases in the body.

For the health of our family and loved ones, we should stop consuming these foods and focus on balanced consumption of unprocessed and wholesomely prepared foods. You can replace the refined white salt in your diet with rock salt or unrefined sea salt, and white rice with brown rice or red rice which are very nutritious and healthy.

Keep watching this space to know more about each of the above mentioned white food items in detail and their substitutes.
