Buttermilk, known as ‘chaas’ in India, is a tangy drink derived from milk. It has the goodness of nutrients like vitamin A, B and C, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, and zinc. In Ayurveda, it’s considered a power food that balances all 3 doshas and nourishes the body. Here are 5 buttermilk health benefits you might find as interesting as we did.

5 Buttermilk Health Benefits You Probably Didn’t Know About

It Helps You Sleep Better.

One of the lesser-known uses for buttermilk is better sleep. This delicious drink can improve your chances of getting timely and peaceful sleep. That’s because it contains magnesium. Research confirms that sufficient amounts of this mineral are vital for those who have anxiety (often a contributor to insomnia) as well as general sleeping problems. Magnesium relaxes the nervous system and controls melatonin, a hormone responsible for your body’s natural sleep cycle. With a glass of warm buttermilk everyday, you can better reach your daily magnesium requirement. Here’s more on how to sleep better.

It Cures and Prevents Yeast Infections.

If you are prone to vaginal yeast infections, include buttermilk in your diet; it has long been used to cure as well as prevent the problem. It is as potent as yoghurt, another popular remedy for yeast infections. Buttermilk has probiotics that keep a check on the amount of bad bacteria in your body. So, it’s quite an effective remedy for yeast infections. As a preventive measure, you can drink a glass of buttermilk a few times a week. But please note that if you already have an infection, it’s safest to use after consulting your doctor.

It Reduces Signs of Skin Ageing.

Did you know about the anti-ageing advantages of buttermilk? Its skin improving properties come from the lactic acid in it. You’d see lactic acid in the ingredients lists of various skin creams. It has been found to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, as well as signs of sun damage. Lactic acid improves the rate at which your skin sheds dead cells and thus refreshes it. And it also adds firmness to the skin. Simply drip a cotton ball in buttermilk and apply it onto your face. After about ten minutes, rinse it off with lukewarm water. You could also include these anti-ageing vitamins in your diet.

It Boosts Cardiovascular Health.

There are buttermilk health benefits for your cardiovascular system too. Studies have found that this drink can contribute to better heart health by hindering your intestines from absorbing cholesterol, thus reducing your bad cholesterol levels. So, you can count buttermilk among the foods you use to keep heart diseases at bay. What’s more, buttermilk has also been found to lower blood pressure – which makes it great for cardiovascular health.

It Improves Digestion.

Buttermilk has been traditionally used to boost digestion since it has a soothing effect on the digestive system. You can use it as a home remedy for indigestion. In fact, it’s even generally safe for those whose bodies cannot tolerate lactose. Buttermilk, unlike many other dairy products, is light on your stomach because it’s low on fat as well as lactose. As we mentioned earlier, it contains probiotics, which helps maintain a healthy gut. To increase its healing abilities, add digestion-boosting spices like ginger and cumin to it.
