Understanding Kapha Dosha – Earth & Water

    Kapha Dosha is weighty amongst all the three doshas. It comprises of the earth and water properties. Embodying lubrication, structure, and stability that our body needs, these characteristics help equalize Vata’s movement & Pitta’s metabolism.

    Functions

    Kapha dosha relates to being steady, loyal and compassionate like that of the earth. It governs our overall protection and maintains the aura.

    Characteristics of Kapha Dosha

    Kapha predominant are slow and stable who take their own sweet time to complete any task. Such individuals work in set patterns and love to stick to one decision not being indecisive. They are more peaceful and easygoing along with being dedicated, loyal and dependable.

    Kaphas can be easily identified with their oftentimes thick & voluptuous hair along with large eyes & radiant skin. They are heavy built & robust personalities possessing excellent immunity & the ability to sleep deeply. Generally, such people are the life-sized teddy bears amongst us being sweet in nature and a pleasure to be with.

    Moreover, remember the earth and water elements of Kapha? These make such people stuck in their own ways and resistant to change. You can recognize a Kapha with his/ her trait of holding on to relationships for long or maybe with an old sweater that they would never let go!

    Symptoms of Kapha Imbalance

    Kapha on the other side, tend to be lethargic, feel sad, face occasional congestion and often encounter an accumulation of things like weight or possessions. Here are a few more symptoms that would help you know in case of Kapha imbalance or excess:

    • Heaviness
    • Inactiveness
    • Feeling of Lethargy
    • Difficulty in Breathing
    • Less or no Appetite
    • Nausea
    • Depression
    • Congestion
    • Excessive Sleep
    • Mucous formation
    • Water Retention
    • Feeling deprived of love/ support
    • Feeling entangled & possessive
    • Obesity
    • Swellings
    • Extra growth

    Balancing Kapha

    Prefer Exercising: Get up and exercise according to your style and capabilities, as it’s important for balancing all the doshas. But the tendency to gain weight for Kaphas makes it mandatory to maintain a healthy lifestyle and get those extra kilos down.

    Choose Herbals: Try herbal teas, juices or oils to soothe your achy joints, keep your body active and free of lethargy. Maintain energy boost as well as mental & physical clarity.

    Maintain Warmth: Stay warm and dry as Kapha-dominant may be sensitive to cold & wet seasons. Aim at reducing congestion and try heating pads or heat lamps as they prove beneficial.

    Kapha Cleanse: Keep the nose, throat & lungs protected from the winter climate. Also keep them properly cleaned for a better respiratory health.

    Say No Clutter: Avoid accumulation implying to physical possessions as Kaphas tend to pile & clutter the surrounding spaces. Organize your belongings & sort all the items according to their usefulness.

    Restore the Balance: Practice yoga, listen to lively music, stimulate your senses with abhyanga massage and gain that lost energy and positivity. Boost your circulation to uplift & and restore your emotional balance along with alleviating the feelings of sadness.
