Diabetes (type 2) is known as madhumeha in Ayurveda. Madhu means honey and meha urine. Ayurveda tells us that diabetes is due to the imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Accumulation of ama (toxins) in the pancreatic cells and impaired insulin production is how this disease develops. If you are diabetic, here is a list of what foods to avoid with diabetes that you ought to know about.

What Foods To Avoid With Diabetes (Type 2)

1. Kapha Aggravating Foods Are Harmful.

Ayurveda advises diabetics to limit the intake of Kapha aggravating foods such as full fat milk products, sesame, nuts, sugarcane, and jaggery. These foods increase weight and provoke Kapha, leading to worsening of diabetes.

2. High Carb Foods Worsen The Condition.

Diabetics should keep away from high carb foods. Why? Because these foods are very high on the GI Scale. So, they cause sugar spikes. Avoid rice, potatoes, refined flour, pumpkin, and fruits like melons and pineapples.

3. Avoid Sugary Drinks And Salty Foods.

Next on what foods to avoid with diabetes are the most tempting sweet and salty combination. A plate of crispy French fries or chips, washed down with a tall glass of cold drink….irresistible, right? But these spike your sugar levels and dangerously imbalance your insulin levels. Curb those cravings please!

4. Dried And Canned Fruits Are A No-No.

Dried fruits can immediately spike your glucose levels. As they are dried, they have a concentrated natural sugar content. Dried fruits, and canned fruits in sugar syrup, jams, jellies, and canned fruit juices are the worst foods for diabetics.

5. Limit Canned Vegetables And Pickles.

Canned vegetables that are stored for a longer shelf life contain a huge amount of sodium. And yes, pickles do add that tanginess to your meals. But amongst the foods to avoid with high blood sugar, they rank very high.

6. Skip The Damaging Desserts.

Desserts made with refined sugar are also among the worst foods for diabetics. They are basically low quality carbohydrates with absolutely no nutritional value. They instantly spike sugar levels. Another reason is that sugar makes you gain weight.

7. Trans and Saturated Fats Are Bad.

Foods that are prepared in saturated or trans fats are also among the worst foods for diabetics. They are bad for your heart too. Even if the label on the can says partially hydrogenated, walk away to the next shelf. Eat food cooked with these healthy oils instead.

8. Be Careful Of Beverages Too.

Last on our list of what foods to avoid with diabetes includes beverages like sodas, beer, alcohol, wines, energy drinks, chocolate drinks, creamed coffee, and sweetened tea. They damage the body’s insulin resistance. They can also cause metabolic changes and lead to belly fat. You don’t want that, do you?

So, all of these are foods that diabetics should avoid. Choose healthy alternatives and live a better life!
