A sound immune system is vital for good health. The environment we live in is filled with toxins and sickness-causing microorganisms. As you navigate through daily life, your body constantly works to defend you from disease. By leading a healthy lifestyle and eating the right kind of food, you can do a lot to support your body’s efforts. Here are some Ayurvedic tips on how to boost your immune system naturally.

How To Boost Your Immune System Naturally

1. Sleep Properly.

First on the list of tips to boost immune system strength is this: aim for deep, restful sleep. Aim to wake up in the morning feeling fresh and energised. Sleep, contrary to popular opinion, is not a period of inactivity. During these hours, your body releases chemicals that play a role in repairing the body, re-energising it, and strengthening its ability to fight sickness. Sleep deprivation can lead to a dangerously weakened immune system.

5 simple tips:

  • Sleep and wake up early.
  • Maintain regular timings.
  • According to Ayurveda, the best time to sleep is before 10 pm, since 6 pm to 10 pm is “Kapha” time and promotes sleep.
  • Switch off electronic gadgets at least 1 hour before you go to bed.
  • Eat a light meal for dinner.

2. Eat Healthy.

Ask any Ayurvedic doctor how to boost immune system naturally, and they’ll tell you to eat a healthy diet. Food either makes you healthier, or contributes to a disease-inclined environment in your body. Here’s a list of what to eat and what to avoid for strong immunity.

Immunity Boosting Foods:

  • Berries
  • Dark leafy greens
  • Cruciferous veggies
  • Garlic
  • Turmeric
  • Citrus fruits
  • Oatmeal
  • Flaxseeds
  • Ginger
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Avocados
  • Olive oil
  • Kiwis
  • Green tea
  • Yoghurt
  • Red bell peppers
  • Chia seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • In general, stick to fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, nuts, fresh milk, and whole grains. Flavour your food with immunity boosting spices.

Immunity Weakening Foods:

  • White sugar – try these alternatives.
  • Alcohol
  • Processed foods – things that are packed, and have been modified artificially.
  • Red meat
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Excess fats
  • Excess deep fried food

3. Be Active.

One can’t ignore the importance of exercise in an age where people spend more and more time with gadgets. Being active is crucial for immunity. There are so many ways to get more active in your everyday life. Break the monotony of sitting in front of your computer with simple desktop yoga exercises. Instead of the elevator, take the stairs. Skip the bus and walk home every Friday. Sign up for yoga or dance classes. Anything works, as long as it gets your blood pumping.

4. Bust Stress.

Another important answer to the question of how to boost your immune system naturally is this: minimise stress in your everyday life. Stress can literally make you sick! Stress responses negatively affect brain function, sleep cycles, digestion, the cardiovascular system, and much more. Plenty of studies confirm that the lesser stressed you are, the lower are your chances of developing diseases.

So, do things that make you feel calm. Revisit an old hobby, or spend more time with family. It could be something as simple as singing on your way home from work. Meditation, researchers have found, goes a long way in reducing the body’s stress responses.
