Most of us end up with that oh-so-irritating wet cough once in a while. It happens when you catch an infection and your body produces extra mucus to fight it. You end up feeling utterly tired and weak – every single time. It’s tempting to pick up across the counter medicines, but they hinder the body’s natural processes by suppressing the symptoms. Ayurveda, on the other hand, works with the body, assisting it to return to a state of well-being. So here are 4 Ayurvedic remedies for wet cough. Ingredients found in your kitchen, they are natural medicines for wet cough and sore throat.

4 Effective Ayurvedic Remedies for Wet Cough

1. Chew on Raw Ginger

We’re sure that your grandmother has already familiarised you with the healing properties of ginger and honey for cough. She couldn’t be more right! Ayurvedic experts recognise ginger for its ability to help your body throw out unwanted fungus and bacteria. It also produces a feeling of revitalisation in your body. Chewing on raw ginger during the day is one of the best ways to reap its benefits. This will speed up the process of fighting off the infection. You can also add ginger to your daily cup of tea. However, skip the milk this time since it can irritate your throat.

2. Add Garlic to Your Meals

Not the best smelling ingredient, but garlic is surely on every list of the top Ayurvedic herbs for cough. Garlic is a powerful antibiotic that’s free from chemicals and side-effects, unlike many conventional western medicines. It is also antiviral in nature. Besides being a strong help in fighting off the infection, garlic also helps your body rid itself of the mucus. Simply add garlic to your food. For example, you can prepare hot daal (Indian lentil soup) with a few extra pieces of garlic. Crush 4 to 5 pieces of garlic and let them boil in the daal for about 15 minutes.

3. Sip on Warm Honey Water

Honey acts as an antiseptic, and it is quite popular among the Ayurvedic remedies for wet cough. If you have a build up of hardening mucus, take some honey to help it loosen up. This will then help the mucus flow better and leave your body. Additionally, honey is also anti-inflammatory and has a healing effect on sore throats. Just like ginger, you can add honey to warm water and prepare a healing tea. Again, it’s best to stay away from milk for the time being. Keep sipping on it during the day. It will not only help with the wet cough, but also have a wonderfully soothing effect.

Bonus Tip: To boost the potency of the honey water, squeeze some lemon into it as well!

4. Consume Mustard Seed Paste

Not as commonly known as ginger, honey and garlic for this purpose, mustard seeds can also help quite well. This ingredient is quite powerful in promoting the release of mucus and loosening it up too. Grind the mustard seeds and add them to water. After 20 minutes, it will turn into a paste. All you have to do it consume the paste. While it’s not the most pleasant remedy because of the taste and smell, we assure you that it will help you heal!

Final Thoughts

In addition to consuming these ingredients, make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. You can also do warm water gargles with salt to ease an itchy throat. Get as much rest as possible and let your body take its time to repair itself. Heal well!
