The everyday hustle bustle makes it difficult for women to even take care of themselves post their deliveries. However, a body massage after delivery is a wonderful (yet neglected) practice. Since ancient times, new mothers have loved this tender touch to soothe their sore spots. But, the generation of today has moved over from the tradition of feeling the essence and releasing their discomforts through such holistic approaches.

Benefits Of Body Massage After Delivery

1. Relaxes Your Body And Mind

After giving birth, a woman’s body gets fatigued and the entire experience feels hectic. But, regular postnatal massages help relieve not only your mental tensions but also bodily discomforts. They help the body release feel good hormones that calm you down and minimise stress.

2. Enhances The Production Of Breast Milk

In order to boost the production of breast milk, a woman needs to stay relaxed. So, a soothing post delivery body massage will help produce more breast milk. You sleep better and oxytocin production too increases. One just needs to make sure that it is a delicate massage. A vigorous one can do more harm than good, so only soft strokes are to be applied.

3. Evens Out Stretch Marks

One of the major benefits of body massage after delivery is how it helps rejuvenate your skin cells. Stretch marks that develop during this period can absolutely fade away with the usage of healing essential oils that hydrate your skin and reduce these marks.

4. Tightens Belly Fat

Body massage after delivery can help tighten the loose belly fat and also improve blood circulation. Yes, all that post delivery flab can gradually get back to its shape. Just make sure that you’ll have to hire a trained professional so as to help you reap all the benefits of a postnatal body massage.

5. Lowers Depression

This is an issue faced by the majority of new mothers. But, a body massage after delivery helps beat the blues. A gentle touch on your body helps calm all your senses and relax all the symptoms of emotional anxieties along with depression.

6. Promotes A Speedy C-Section Recovery

In case you’ve had a cesarean, post delivery massage will help you recover faster. Although make it clear that until your wounds don’t heal, do not disturb the area. It is only after a few days, that you must hire an expert and promote internal healing.

7. It Gives You A Break

Let all other benefits aside, but a body massage after delivery gives you women a break and makes you experience a positive me-time. It helps you gain strength to meet the needs of caring for the baby and also managing your home or work. It is just like a period to help you unwind!

Precautions To be Taken

1. C-Section is a major surgery that requires a long healing time as it comes accompanied with immense pain. Recover first, let your scars heal, get a green signal from your doctor and then opt for a post-delivery massage.

2. Right away, instruct your masseuse to stay away from areas you do not feel comfortable being massaged on.

3. Body massage after delivery is a complete no-no, in case you’ve developed any skin issues like rashes or boils.

4. Do not go for such a massages if you’re a patient of high blood pressure.

5. Provide your own oils and do a patch test as well.

Some More Tips…

You will have to first take that important time out to easily go through this phase. Ask your friends or family for help. Pick the right time. Make it a point to not miss the massage time. Additionally, post-delivery massages generally come to your home so you can benefit from that. And try to plan a schedule beforehand.

New mothers with a normal delivery can start with their post delivery massages right after they’re back home or after 5 to 6 days. Give yourself a week’s or 15 day’s time if it’s a C-Sect. Continue with the body massage after delivery until around 40 to 45 days.

Make use of these essential oils for your post-delivery massage: Mustard, sesame, coconut, almond and/or any postpartum herbal oils. Apart from these, your masseuse can also apply sunflower, olive, wheat germ or grapeseed oil. Choose a masseuse who specialises in the job and is also good for massaging newborns. He/she should be aware of the best techniques to release all your bodily tensions. The massage starts with your feet, moves up to your thighs and ends right on your head.

Avoid using oils over the skin of your breasts as it can be an irritant for the baby and a hard massage can cause troubles to you as well. Let this message happen like your regular massages, the only difference here would be an experienced hand that’s the best in taking care of new mothers.
