A bone fracture can cause extreme pain, followed by a whole lot of discomfort in the weeks or months to come. The wonderful thing though is that in most cases, our bodies build back the bone on their own in just a matter of months. One of the important questions that come to mind is: how can I heal faster? There are simple measures you can take to support your body’s bone fracture healing process. Your bone fracture healing can go a whole lot smoother if you eat right and follow these lifestyle tips.

Bone Fracture Healing: Ayurvedic Diet & Lifestyle Tips

1. Eat Plenty Of These Nutrients.

When healing from broken bones, your body’s nutritional needs increase profoundly. While you should eat an overall balanced diet, certain nutrients hold extra importance. They support the process of bone building and ensure faster recovery.

  • Protein: Milk, ghee, peanuts, lentils, beans, chia seeds, Greek yoghurt, quinoa
  • Calcium: Broccoli, milk, almonds, soy beans, kale, cheese, bok choy
  • Vitamin D: Morning sunlight and fortified products like milk and cereals
  • Vitamin C: Amla, kiwis, oranges, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, leafy greens
  • Iron: Beet, dried fruits, lentils, tofu, spinach, cashew nuts, whole grains

2. Take Care Of Your Cast.

Casts are commonly used in bone fracture treatment. It’s extremely important to take good care of yours. Most doctors advise their patients to:

  • Elevate the injured region above their heart. This prevents swelling and minimises pain.
  • Don’t insert objects inside the cast. We know it’s hard, but you’ll just have to bear the itching for now!
  • After a certain point, you’ll be asked to exercise the joints that are not under the cast. Do this regularly.
  • Never try to re-adjust the cast on your own. If it’s uncomfortable, speak to your doctor.

3. Get Loads Of Sleep.

In Ayurveda, it has been a long known fact that sleep is crucial for the body’s repair functions. Ayurvedic experts have therefore always recommended getting proper sleep to recover better from injury. Drinking a cup of warm turmeric milk not only help sleep better, but also reduces inflammation, relieves pain, and can fight free radicals.

4. Don’t Smoke.

Ayurveda strongly advises against smoking since it depletes the body’s prana (life energy) and causes a host of health problems from heart disease to lung cancer. When it comes to bone healing, smoking can significantly slow the process down. It  reduces the production of your precious new bone cells, decreases the absorption of calcium, and weakens the muscles as well as bones. So, try to quit it!

5. Soothe Yourself With Aromatherapy.

If your pain is tremendous, we won’t stop you from taking the meds your doctor prescribed. But if it’s bearable, you could turn to natural pain relievers that have fewer side effects. Aromatherapy is excellent in soothing your nerves. You could use oils like that of lavender, peppermint, rose, and jasmine. Of course, discuss it with your doctor first – especially if you have conditions like depression, vertigo or high blood pressure.
