Today, almost every kind of food product can be packaged. Be it processed, frozen, canned meat, fish, poultry, vegetables, probiotic drinks, dairy products, diet snacks, ready-to-eat meals…go to a supermarket and you can find it all! Yes, it is very convenient – but do you know the harmful effects of packaged food items? Since most of these foods are processed, let us first get to know why are processed foods bad for us.

The Harmful Effects Of Packaged Food Items

1. Food Enhancers Are Poison.

Food enhancers for flavour, texture, and colour make processed food more tempting. But they cause feelings of nausea, headaches, insomnia, depression, nervousness, reproductive disorders and raise blood pressure too.

2. They Have Loads Of Artificial Ingredients.

Most of the substances in the synthetic chemicals used in processing food can creep into and mix with the food items. Then, they enter our bodies and can upset our organs over a period of time. Another reason you now know why are processed foods bad.

3. They Have Low Nutritional Value.

A lot of minerals and vitamins get lost when during the process of processing foods. And then to make up for this, they add artificial substances. These further lower the nutritional value of the food. Our body does not receive the required nutrition. This is one of the reasons why processed foods are bad.

4. They Are High In Trans Fat.

Processed foods usually contain refined vegetable oil or seed oil – these are usually hydrogenated oils. They tend to raise the bad LDL cholesterol and bring down the good cholesterol levels. They contain high amounts of fatty acids like Omega-6 that lead to oxidation and inflammation in the body. Eww!

5. You Also Take In Too Much Sugar.

The very high amount of sugar in soft and frizzy drinks makes them sweeter as well as more appealing. We get tempted and choose them over other healthy options like fresh juices, water, or milk. Drinking these regularly causes tooth decay, lethargy, sleepiness, fatigue, as well as loss of appetite. As they are diuretic, they also cause dehydration.

6. You Ingest Excess Salt.

You’d find a lot of excess salt in processed foods. Our body has to hold back the fluid to decrease the extra sodium from the packaged food in the blood. This increases the volume of blood, putting more pressure on the heart and constricting the veins as well as arteries. All of this makes our blood pressure rise.

7. They Cause A Host Of Diseases.

Why are processed foods bad? They can literally make you sick! Because all of the above mentioned points, this shouldn’t be surprising. One of the serious processed food facts is that they lead to diseases like cancer, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Yes, packaged foods are much more appealing, but if we really look into the harmful effects of packaged food items, it will be a wise decision to avoid them.

Eat fresh. Stay healthy!
