The summer season can be utterly unpleasant when you are prone to headaches. Research confirms that when temperatures rise, so does the frequency of their occurrences. They take on different forms…throbbing, constant, irregular, migrating and so on. But they all share one thing in common – they feel absolutely awful and disrupt the ability to carry out daily tasks. Ugh! But worry not, here are some easy ways to prevent as well as cure a heat headache.

Quick and Easy Tips to Tackle a Heat Headache

1. Food to Eat and Avoid

Choose your foods wisely since they can either trigger or heal a heat headache. Stay away from ingredients that create heat sickness like pungent food, MSG, caffeine, alcohol, aspartame and excess processed sugar. These are all proven causes of headaches. If you eat meat, avoid red meat for the time being.

On the other hand, eat lots of citrus fruits including oranges, tomatoes and lemon. Apple and apple cider vinegar are wonder foods for treating a heat headache. Highly effective Ayurvedic headache healers are ginger and basil leaves. You can make a lovely herbal tea with ginger and basil leaves mixed in warm water. You can add a bit of honey for taste. Chewing on basil leaves is also quite helpful – however, don’t do it too much since stress on your jaws can make a headache worse.

2. Water is Your Friend in Need

Dehydration is a sure-shot contributor to a horrible headache, as well as heat stroke. And it’s extremely common to end up like that during the summer. Especially if you travel long distance to your workplace in the afternoons. So simply carry a water bottle along with you and keep refilling it as and when you run out of water. If you sense a headache coming on, immediately drink some water. And importantly, don’t drink caffeinated drinks – including sodas! Beer and other alcoholic drinks are also a no-no. They are counterproductive since they dehydrate you and will make matters worse. Moreover, drink your water at room temperature, not cold.

3. Relax with Aromas

Aromatherapy is a wonderful treatment for heat exhaustion. With the right kind of fragrance, and you’ll feel the heat headache begin to fade. What to smell? Eucalyptus oil is a popular Ayurvedic ingredient that treats pain and inflammation. Peppermint oil regulates blood flow and is recognised as an effective reliever. Other potent oils you can smell are Tea tree oil, lavender and rosemary. Mix just a couple of drops of the oil and massage it on your head. And keep inhaling the fragrance.

4. Tweak Your Lifestyle

If you constantly use gadgets, eat erratically, work late in the night, and don’t exercise, you’re pretty much setting yourself up for a hard time! You know what to do – cut down tech use after Sunset, plan your day in a way that you can relax more, eat at regular timings and practice something healthy like yoga and meditation. These are proven ways to improvs your overall health and immune yourself from things like headache and exhaustion. Even if they do happen, your body and mind will be equipped to handle it much better.
