Those who don’t experience any symptoms of gallbladder diseases tend to not even give this organ a second thought. But your gallbladder plays a vital role in digestion. This organ works as a storehouse of bile juice, the liquid your digestive system uses to digest fats in the food you eat. When you don’t take care of your gallbladder, you may risk developing gallstones and other such conditions. But it’s easy to improve it with diet. So, here’s a list of foods to eat for gallbladder health, as well as what you should steer clear of.

Spotting Gallbladder Problems

First, let’s talk about the symptoms. If you have the following signs, you might have a gallbladder issue and should see a doctor:

  • Appetite loss
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Tea coloured urine
  • Lighter stool colour
  • Fatty stools
  • Tenderness under the right side of the rib cage
  • Food not digesting
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhoea
  • Belching
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Weight loss
  • Fever

Foods To Eat For Gallbladder Health

1. Fibre Filled Foods

Studies have proved that lack of dietary fibre increases the risk of developing a gallbladder condition, while meeting your daily requirement can go a long way in improving this organ’s health. Luckily, there’s fibre in a lot of food. Oatmeal, black beans, whole grains, nuts, and a variety of fruits and vegetables provide it.

2. Healthy Fats

Not all fats are made equal. Just yesterday, we discussed trans fat and better alternatives in this article about controlling cholesterol naturally. Good food for gallbladder stone problems contains healthy fats such as medium chain fats and Omega-3 fatty acids. Some sources of healthy fats are olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, flaxseeds, and walnuts. But note that moderation is key.

3. Greens

Next on our list of foods to eat for gallbladder health is green vegetables, the ultimate power foods. Gallbladder problems or not, they should be a part of everyone’s diet. Bitter greens contribute to a healthy digestive system by improving bile production. Dark leafy greens contain loads of magnesium that your body can use to reduce excess calcium, thus helping keep gallstones at bay. Green veggies also have electrolytes, fibre, and antioxidants that maintain smooth functioning of the gallbladder and other body organs too. So, add greens to your daily diet.

4. Water

It’s extremely important to stay well hydrated to avoid gallbladder stones. Dehydration can cause this painful condition. And your body needs enough water to produce the required quantities of bile juice. The recommended daily amount for is 2.7 litres for women and 3.7 litres for men. If you find it hard to remember to drink water, enjoy herbal teas, juices, and soups during the day.

  • Sources of unhealthy fats like fried food, baked goods, packed cookies, processed food, and most junk food.
  • Red meat
  • Vegetable oils
