Are you someone who’s been feeling too restless lately? Do you find it difficult to stay still? Is there an uncontrollable urge to keep moving or your thoughts keep wandering? Wait, it’s not just anxiety but something else. Heard of the akathisia symptoms. If not, then you must know what is akathisia, how can it be life-threatening and what is its cure? 

What Is Akathisia?

Akathisia is a movement disorder which is majorly observed in psychotic as well as mental disorder patients. Mostly, it’s a side effect of certain kind of drugs that leads to you feeling restless that too repetitively. Fidgeting and rocking a leg are also common akathisia symptoms. It is also said to be a torturous condition and the treatment needs to be carried out right away.

What Causes Akathisia?

The exact cause of akathisia is unknown, but some attribute it to the disturbance in the serotonin and dopamine levels. It could also be due to the overstimulation of some parts of the brain like Locus Ceruleus. There is another theory that believes what causes Akathisia is the side effects of psychotropic drugs.

What Are The Akathisia Symptoms?

  • Feeling restless
  • Inability to stay still
  • Compulsion to move
  • Rocking and fidgeting
  • Anger and agitation
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Nervousness and fear
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Confusion and slow processing of thoughts
  • Worsening of psychotic symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss

Akathisia Treatment

1. St. John’s Wort Soothes The Brain.

St. John’s wort is an adaptogenic herb which means they treat stress and anxiety. Brew a tea by adding the herb to a cup of water. Boil the tea for 10 minutes and drink it to get rid of akathisia symptoms.

2. Valerian Roots Helps In Sleeping.

What is akathisia treatment for feeling restless? Valerian root. It acts as a sedative to reduce excessive pain in the body and also helps you sleep better. So, add a teaspoon of valerian root powder in a cup of boiling water. Steep the tea for 8 minutes, strain and drink twice daily. 

3. Lavender Essential Oil Calms The Body.

Sleeplessness and nervousness are common akathisia symptoms. Therefore, the lavender essential oil is effective. Its aroma calms the body to work as an effective akathisia treatment. You can also add a few drops of the oil in your bathing water for more relaxation.

4. Brahmi Is An Adaptogenic Herb.

Brahmi is known as a brain tonic. It balances the doshas in the body and increases blood flow. So, take 500mg of Brahmi powder with a teaspoon of honey.

5. Ginseng Reduces Akathisia Symptoms.

Ginseng heals nausea as well as the loss of appetite. So, prepare ginseng tea when feeling restless. Boil a teaspoon of ginseng tea leaves/ powder in a cup of water for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and drink warm daily.
