In Ayurveda, healthy digestion is considered vital for good health. And it’s a no-brainer that by eating healthy food, you can significantly improve the health of your digestive system. So, what’s the best food for digestion? Here are 9 answers.

What Is The Best Food For Digestion?

1. Probiotic Yoghurt

Probiotic yoghurt is one of the best foods to maintain a wholesome balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. It contains healthy bacteria that help your body absorb nutrients from food at its optimal potential. It can also soothe an upset stomach and tackle problems like diarrhoea. Stick to unflavoured yoghurt.

2. Ginger

In Ayurveda, ginger is an example of the best food for digestion. It has been used for its digestion improving effects for thousands of years. This spice treats stomach problems like excess gas, acid reflux, diarrhoea, and stomach ache. It’s also excellent for nausea. Simply add ginger to your meals, or drink warm ginger tea. But watch out for these side effects.

3. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, Swiss chard, cabbage, and bok choy are great for a variety of things. This includes digestion. They have very little calories but plenty of fibre as well as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These veggies add bulk to stool. However, it’s best to cook them for easy digestibility.

4. Lemon

Lemon contains pectin, a kind of fibre that promotes better gut bacteria, thus boosting digestive health. The citric acid in lemons has also been found to improve digestion and prevent kidney stones. Traditionally, freshly squeezed lemon in warm water is thought to detoxify the digestive system.

5. Oatmeal

Oats make a great breakfast for better digestion. Oatmeal has oodles of fibre that prolongs the digestion process. It boosts nutrient as well as sugar absorption, improves bowel movements, helps get rid of toxins, and also helps you stay full for longer.

6. Fennel Seed

Another example of the best food for digestion is fennel seed, also called ‘sauf’ in India. This food cleanses the digestive tract, and significantly improves bile juice secretion. Warm fennel tea eases digestive ailments like constipation, flatulence, and diarrhoea.

7. Beet

Ayurvedic experts often ask those with weak digestion to eat more beet. These red root veggies are excellent liver cleansers. As you may know, the liver plays an important role in digestion. Beets contain very high amounts of fibre. They also provide you with folate, another essential nutrient for smooth and efficient digestion.

8. Kiwi

Kiwi is an incredible fruit with a variety of health benefits, including digestion. Kiwis have been found to relieve constipation, improve the absorption of protein, ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, and maintain better bacterial balance in the digestive tract. So, indulge in a kiwi everyday for better digestive health.

9. Bananas

Next up, bananas. This digestion boosting fruit has loads of fibre, pectin, and potassium. It supports detoxification, promote healthy bacterial balance, aids bowel movement, and soothes the digestive tract. Bananas can also help if you have acid reflux. So, eat a banana a day for healthy digestion.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to eat everything in moderation – even nutrients like fibre that are essential for smoother digestion can cause harm in excess.
