If you live in or have been to India, you are probably familiar with the practice of chewing flavourful fennel seeds (also called ‘saunf’) after meals. These seeds are not merely mouth fresheners – they’re incredibly good for your body. That’s why we want you to try making yourself an aromatic cup of fennel tea. In this article, we’ll tell you all about the health benefits you’ll reap from a warm refreshing cup of sauf tea.

What Is Fennel Seed?

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), though native to Europe, is a widely cultivated plant with pretty yellow flowers. And it belongs to the carrot family. Yes, carrot! Its leaves, flowers, oil as well as seeds have been used as Ayurvedic remedies for thousands of years. The seed tastes and smells similar to aniseed. And the tea is really quite delicious.

5 Noteworthy Fennel Tea Benefits

1. Boosted Digestion

One of the most well known saunf health benefits in India is improved digestive health. This seed has a cleansing effect on the digestive system. Fennel tea enables your gastrointestinal tract to relax as well as increases the secretion of bile juice. It tackles a range of digestive issues like constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, flatulence, and indigestion.

2. Stronger Immunity

There’s no denying the fact that amidst the bustle of life, we must make conscious efforts to keep our immune system strong. Sipping on refreshing cups of saunf tea is a great way of ensuring it since fennel has been found to boost your immune system with its potent antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiseptic effects. It’s great for clearing out chest congestion too.

3. Improved Cardiovascular Health

Not many people know that fennel tea benefits the heart too. It’s packed with antioxidants, fibre and potassium, which are important for better cardiovascular health. Fennel tea has been found to cause a drop in bad cholesterol levels and prevent a rise in blood pressure. This keeps heart diseases at bay.

4. Hormonal Balance in Women

Saunf tea has been traditionally used to bring about better hormonal balance in women. Research confirms that saunf benefits women due to its estrogen-like effects on the body. This helps induce a period, as well as relieve menstrual and menopausal symptoms. So if you suffer from terrible cramps every month, fennel tea might just be the perfect solution.

5. Weight Loss

Healthy weight loss is among the popular benefits of saunf. As we mentioned earlier, it boosts digestive health which in turn helps you absorb nutrients as well as burn fat at a much better rate, thus making your workout routine much more effective. It also curbs daytime cravings for munchies. Moreover, reduces water retention in the body.

A Simple Saunf Tea Recipe

You’ll need:

  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 ½ cup of water

Pour the water into a pot and turn on the heat. Then, add the teaspoon of fennel seeds and bring it to a boil. Once it reaches boiling point turn down the heat and let it simmer for about 3 minutes. Pour it out and enjoy warm.

Watch Out For These Possible Side Effects!

  • Allergic reactions, especially among those allergic to celery and carrots
  • Worsening of estrogen dependant cancers
  • Increased risk of seizures in those with epilepsy
  • Interaction with medication like birth control pills
  • Possible harmful effects for pregnant women and their foetuses
  • Slower blood clotting and increased risk of bleeding

Ayurveda always encourages moderation. So don’t drink more than 3 cups a day! And if you have any health problems and are taking medication, please consult your doctor about its safety for you.
