    Heavy periods can be a pain – quite literally too! Medically termed as menorrhagia, abnormally high menstrual bleeding can be caused by reasons that range from physical to psychological. In Ayurveda, menorrhagia is called ‘Asrigdara’, meaning ‘excess blood flow’. It brings with it a considerable amount of discomfort, anaemia, acne, and fevers too. According to Ayurveda, menorrhagia results from aggravation of the Vata, Pitta or Kapha doshas – either individually or in combination. So factors like excessive fasting, spicy food, strenuous exercise, high stress as well as a generally unhealthy lifestyle can throw your doshas off balance, leading to this condition. Without further ado, let’s get to the important matter of Ayurvedic medicine for menorrhagia.

    Ayurvedic Medicine for Menorrhagia a.k.a Excess Menstrual Bleeding

    In the system of Ayurveda, herbs are rather powerful medicines that have nearly everything your body needs to return to a balanced state. There are various herbs for women’s general health too. So here’s a list of Ayurvedic medicines for menorrhagia that you may be advised to take by a health expert – depending on your body-mind constitution.

    Herbs:

    • Draksha or raisins
    • Nagakesara or Mesua ferrea
    • Shatavari or Asparagus racemosus
    • Sariva or Hemidesmus indicus Schult
    • Chandana or Santalum alba
    • Padmakesara or stamen of lotus
    • Bala or Sida cordifolia
    • Lodhra or Symplocos racemosa
    • Daruharidra or Berberis aristata
    • Udeechya or Pavonia odorata
    • Gokshura or Tibulus terrestris
    • Lajjalu or Mimosa pudica
    • Dhataki or Woodfordia fruticosa

    Preparations:

    • Shatavari Guda: Effectively heals several conditions of the reproductive system, urinary tract, the liver as well as hormonal imbalances, especially in women
    • Shatavari Ghrita: Heals health problems of the urinary system
    • Chandanasava: Improves strength, cardiac health as well as digestion
    • Ashokarishta: Relieves menstrual cramps, fever and heavy bleeding too
    • Jatiphala Choorna: Improves the digestive system
    • Lodhrasava: Heals bleeding disorders, piles as well as anemia
    • Raktapittantak Loh: Heals bleeding disorders and provides the body with iron too
    • Pushyanuga Choorna: Heals bleeding disorders
    • Pravala Bhasma: Heals bleeding disorders

    These medicines function differently from one another, balance a specific dosha, and address a specific root cause of Menorrhagia.
