It is since ancient times that fasting has been practiced for the upkeep of the body. Ayurveda believes that even one day fast balances the doshas and weaves a connection between the mind and body. Fasting once a week has similar health benefits of fasting continuously for a week or months. But, is fasting healthy? If yes, what are the health benefits of fasting once a week? 

Is Fasting Healthy?

Fasting is an age-old practice and has is also been medically beneficial. According to Ayurveda, fasting one day a week gradually heals the symptoms and subsequently destroys the disease. Initially, you may experience dizzy, nausea, bloating, as well as gas. However, Ayurveda suggests starting with monthly fasting and then moving on to fasting once a week.

Health Benefits Of Fasting Once A Week

1. One Day Fast Reverses Aging.

Aging is a natural process, and fasting once a week can assist in slowing down the process. Fasting for a day releases all the toxins or ama from the body, keeping the body clean. It also promotes metabolism, hence, reversing aging.

2. Weekly Fasting Promotes Joint Health.

Health benefits of fasting one day a week can keep the joints healthy. The benefits of fasting once a week is that you stay away from tamasic foods preventing several diseases.

3. One Day Fast Teaches Appreciation.

The benefits of fasting once a week include realizing the importance of food. When you cannot eat food at wish, then you start appreciating it.

4. Fasting For A Day Keeps You Active.

Eating in excess or having full meals every day can make you feel heavy and lethargic. Is fasting healthy? Fasting for a day keeps you brimming with energy and functional throughout the day.

5. One Day Fast Encourages Water Consumption.

Generally, people tend to ignore the need to fill the body with water and end up dehydrating themselves. On a fasting day, drink as much as water as you can. In fact, drink infused water to keep the body cool and hydrated.

Points To Note For Weekly Fasting

  • Fast on a day when you can rest more like a Saturday or Sunday.
  • Do not take up rigorous exercising or physical work while fasting.
  • Avoid staying on a fast for more than 24 hours.
  • Do not eat a heavy meal for breaking the fast. 
  • Eat fruits throughout the day.
  • People with illnesses must avoid fasting.
