Gastritis results from the inflammation or erosion of the stomach lining. Common gastritis causes are infection, bacterial imbalance in the digestive tract, unhealthy diet, reaction to medication, improper lifestyle, and even stress. But simply by managing your gastritis diet, you can find ways to manage the problem and support healing. So, here is what to eat and what to steer clear of.

Foods To Include In Your Gastritis Diet

1. Probiotics

While dairy can irritate the stomach, low fat probiotics like yoghurt are super foods for digestion. They increase the amounts of healthy bacteria in the gut that strengthen immunity as well as fight harmful bacteria. Kefir, kombucha, kimchi, and sauerkraut are other good options.

2. Fibre Filled Food

Include lots of fibre filled food in your gastritis diet. Insoluble fibre, in particular, is helpful. It aids digestion by promoting the smooth movement of foods through the digestive tract. Eat oatmeal, barley, apples, bananas, broccoli, and carrots.

3. Fluids

Fluids are also some of the foods that help with gastritis. Drink enough of water. Green tea contains catechins that are thought to help the body heal from gastritis – however, drink it in moderation. Fruit and vegetable smoothies are good. But avoid juices made with acidic ingredients. More on that later in the article.

4. Garlic

Garlic is a great food for gastritis. Studies have found that it has powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. And it also boosts immunity. But note that garlic is acidic and may worsen the situation for some, so discuss it with your doctor and watch your portions.

5. Ginger

Ayurvedic doctors often advise adding ginger to one’s diet for gastritis. Ginger has long been hailed as a digestion easing herb. It soothes the stomach lining, reduces inflammation, and fights unhealthy bacteria too. Simply add it to your food, or drink a few cups of warm ginger tea regularly.

6. Vegetables

Vegetables, especially dark leafy greens, are packed with nutrients that boost your immunity and increase strength. On the other hand, they contain very little calories and fat. For some people though, gas causing foods like broccoli can increase flatulence. So you might have to test and try.

Foods To Avoid

1. Pungent Tastes

Avoid any pungent ingredients in your food, like chilies, onions, and mustard. They can irritate the stomach, increase inflammation, and worsen gastritis.

2. Processed Stuff

Processed food is among the top gastritis foods to avoid. These foods contain loads of preservatives and artificial flavours that are super harmful.

3. Fried Food

Fried food is, as you may already know, is incredibly heavy on the digestive system. They can lead to severe irritation when you have gastritis.

4. Anything Acidic

Next on the lit of foods to avoid if you have gastritis is acidic food. This also includes fruits with citric acid. Sugar, coffee, sodas, alcohol, and carbonated beverages – stay away from all of these.

5. Unhealthy Fats

Unhealthy fats increase inflammation in the digestive tract. Some examples are red meat, fried food, and baked goods.
