Enlargement of the thyroid gland is medically termed as goiter disease.  It causes excess swelling in the throat region. This is known as Galaganda in Ayurveda. Ayurveda further classifies Galaganda on the basis of the causes. Vataj Galaganda is caused by vitiated vayu. Kapha Galaganda results from vitiated Kapha. Whereas, the Medoj Galaganda is caused by vitiated Medoj Dhatu. Further, we will discuss what is goiter, the most common goiter symptoms as well as the effective goiter treatment.

What Is Goiter Disease?

People often wonder what is goiter. This is a disease caused by the thyroid gland. The entire throat region swells up so much that it becomes tough to breathe or swallow food. The swelling is found to be non-cancerous and painless – in most cases. Goiter is most common among women above the age of 40.

What Are The Goiter Causes?

Deficiency of iodine is the major cause of goiter disease. Pregnancy, as well as menopause, are leading causes of goiter amongst women. Exposure to radiation, anti-retroviral drugs, immunosuppressant drugs and fungal or viral infections can also cause goiter. Cigarette smoking is responsible for goiter in many cases.

What Are The Goiter Symptoms?

Goiter symptoms are prevalent in people suffering from malnutrition. These are the most common goiter symptoms:

  • Excessive coughing
  • Uncomfortable feeling in the throat
  • Swelling in the throat region
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Experiencing pain while swallowing
  • Hoarseness in voice
  • Mood swings
  • Losing or gaining weight
  • Wheezing

Goiter Treatment

Apart from drugs or surgery, following are some home based remedies for goiter treatment:

1 . Garlic Is A Wonder Herb.

Garlic helps in the production of glutathione. This herb contains selenium, which further regulates the thyroid gland. Chew some garlic cloves in the morning. You can also coat garlic with honey or use it as an ingredient in recipes like chutney.

2. Salt Effectively Prevents The Condition.

Increasing the intake of iodine can prevent as well as treat goiter disease. Flavour your food with iodised salt.

3. Turmeric Is Anti-Inflammatory.

Prepare a thick paste of turmeric in a pan. Store it in an airtight container and have a teaspoon of it every day. Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help in goiter treatment. It also guards body cells from the harmful effects of thyroid imbalance.

4. Coconut Oil Aids Better Absorption.

Coconut oil is enriched with lauric acid. This is an important catalyst that helps in better absorption of iodine in the body.

5. Beets Are Beneficial.

Beetroot contains a high amount of betalin pigments. They have powerful antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties. You can have boiled, baked or steamed beets to cure goiter.

6. Sunflower Is Soothing.

You will need to grind the roots of sunflower along with garlic. Shape them into cakes and wear it on your swollen neck. This heals the goiter swelling.

7. Neck Exercises Are Helpful.

Gentle stretching or exercising your neck helps in goiter treatment. Lifting your chin towards the ceiling or bending your neck on each sides are great exercises. These exercises help stretch muscles attached to thyroid as well as provide relief.
