  • 6. Sage

Ayurvedic experts have for long known that foods have potent medicinal properties and can boost your brain power significantly. Today, many researchers are discovering these benefits too. Here is how to improve memory and concentration with these 6 vegetarian foods.

6 Plant Based Foods That Improve Memory And Concentration

1. Whole Grains

If you want to improve memory and concentration, include plenty of whole grains in your diet. These foods enable your brain to receive the energy that it needs to function on an everyday basis. This energy comes from glucose, which is boosted when you eat whole grains. Eat whole grains like brown rice, barley, buckwheat, and oatmeal.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is a fantastic Ayurvedic spice that has been used in Asian cooking for ages. Most of turmeric’s brain boosting properties come from a compound called curcumin. Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant effects on the brain. Studies confirm that it can not only increase brain power, but also protect from diseases like Alzheimer’s. Drinking a warm glass of turmeric milk every night improves sleep and reduces stress levels. This itself can do a lot to improve memory and concentration.

3. Blueberries

Blueberries are an incredibly healthy fruit. If you tend to have short term memory loss, you might want to snack on a bunch of these berries everyday. Studies have found that blueberries can not only improve memory and concentration, but also help prevent diseases like dementia. Their brain boosting properties are attributed mostly to their high antioxidant content.

4. Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin is among the top winter foods we recently spoke about. Its seeds have plenty of zinc and magnesium. Both these minerals have been found to improve memory, cognitive power, as well as moods. You can add pumpkin seeds to salads, stews, and curries too.

5. Flaxseed

Among the healthiest seeds on the planet, flaxseed contains high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are extremely healthy for your brain. In fact, some studies suggest that they can even have anti-ageing effects on your brain. Omega-3s boost brain function, reduce the risk of depression, improve your cognitive abilities, and of course, help you remember better.  So, add flaxseed to your diet. Here are some side effects of flaxseed worth taking note of.

6. Sage

Last on the brain foods list is sage, a valued herb in Ayurveda. For a long time, it has been believed to improve memory when added to food. Now, research confirms this too. This herb contains loads of antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress on the brain, lower inflammation. One study found that it protects a certain chemical messenger called acetylcholine. This can help prevent dementia.
