Rheumatism results from disturbances in your immune system. As part of the defence mechanism of your body, the antibodies start attacking your own cells and tissues. Therefore, it classifies as an auto-immune disease. There are several forms of rheumatism. Rheumatoid Arthritis is the most common. It leads to severe pain and inflammation. Rheumatism also causes bone decay. So, it’s wise to look for qualified and experienced Ayurvedic doctors to get your rheumatism treatment from.

What Causes Rheumatism?

A stressful, sedentary lifestyle as well as improper food habits cause problems in the digestive system. This further leads to the formation of toxins known as ‘ama’ and vitiation of the Vata dosha. Modern day Vata-aggravating lifestyle causes the increased dosha to circulate ama throughout the body and get deposited in the joints, causing ‘Amavata’, the Ayurvedic term for this condition.

What Are The Rheumatism Symptoms?

  • Pain or swelling in the joints or muscles
  • Stiffness
  • Structural deformities
  • Anemia

Rheumatism Treatment

Ayurveda suggests that rheumatism treatment is possible by regulating your metabolism, proper digestion and excretion of waste from the body. Rheumatism treatment involves pacification of the Vata dosha and cleansing the toxins.

1. Samana Chikitsa or Pacification Therapy

In Samana Chikitsa, the patient takes Ayurvedic medicines that improve the efficiency of digestion by regulating the digestive fire. This treatment also checks the formation as well as the spread of toxins.

 2. Sodhana Chikitsa or Purification Therapy

Sodhana Chikitsa is a form of purification needed when medicines cannot control the highly vitiated doshas, and so they need to be eliminated. The Sodhana Chikitsa involves a five-step purification process known as Panchakarma.

3. Panchakarma Treatment For Rheumatism

Panchakarma is the most efficient but time-consuming therapy for the treatment of rheumatism. It’s a three-step process. It involves Purva-karma or pre-treatment, Pradhana-karma or main treatment and paschat-karma or post-treatment. Panchakarma is a very complex treatment. Hence, only qualified and experienced therapists should carry out the procedure.

  • Purva Karma: Pre-Treatment For Rheumatism

Pre-treatment prepares your body and the mind for primary treatment or the Pradhan-Karma. This stage involves snehana or oleation, swedana or sudation, as well as massage therapy. It reduces excess toxins deposited in various parts of the body.

  • Pradhana Karma Rheumatism Treatment

The primary treatment or the Pradhana-Karma is the main stage of the rheumatism treatment. This constitutes of five crucial steps and further includes the naysa (nasal therapy), virechana (medicated purgation), vamana (medicated emesis) and nirooha vastir (enema using concoctions with herbal oils).

  • Post Treatment Tips For Rheumatism

Your body takes time to return to normalcy after the pre and the primary treatments. However, this important process is carefully carried out with proper nourishment and a balanced diet. It is also further recommended to have a stress-free lifestyle to control the Vata and ama in our body.
