Vertigo is a condition characterised by dizziness and loss of balance – resulting from damage to the inner ear. Yoga for vertigo can be quite helpful, since certain poses can significantly improve the functioning of the brain, nervous system, and other body organs. Here are 5 poses that fight the dizziness and soothe vertigo symptoms.

Yoga For Vertigo: 5 Poses With Video Demonstrations

1. Corpse Pose a.k.a Savasana

This pose is for absolute relaxation. It reduces blood pressure, and drains away all the stress, fatigue, as well as heaviness from the body and mind. Corpse Pose is said to reduce dizziness quickly and with less effort. It transports you to a state of calmness and meditation, and when you wake up, you feel refreshed and energised.

Contraindications:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Back injury

2. Supported Head Stand a.k.a Salamba Sirsasana

It takes time to learn this pose properly, but it’s a highly effective yoga for vertigo solution. It increases blood flow in the head – as a result, your brain gets more oxygen and has a wonderfully calming effect on the nervous system. This asana therefore relieves vertigo as well as anxiety. And once you get the hang of it, it’s quite fun to do!

Demonstration:

Contraindications:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Menstruation
  • Pregnancy
  • Headache
  • Cardiac conditions
  • Neck injury
  • Back injury

3. Legs Up The Wall a.k.a Viparita Karani

One of the easiest poses in yoga for dizziness, the Legs Up The Wall pose can go a long way in relieving the symptoms of vertigo like dizziness, headache, as well as loss of balance. It has a calming effect on the nervous system and helps you unwind after a difficult day. You will likely find it easier to have sound sleep after doing this asana. It also improves digestion and reduces pain in the legs.

Contraindications:

  • Menstruation
  • Pregnancy
  • Eye conditions like glaucoma
  • Neck conditions

4. Child’s Pose a.k.a Balasana

Child’s Pose is another vertigo yoga solution that has immensely relaxing effects on the mind. It is therefore also a great pose if you happen to feel stressed or mentally fatigued. This asana reduces dizziness and has a refreshing effect on the body and mind. Over time, it increases the feeling of being grounded and improves the functioning of the nervous system.

Demonstration:

Contraindications:

  • Pregnancy
  • Acute arthritis
  • Knee injury
  • Diarrhoea

5. Seated Forward Bend a.k.a Paschimmotasana

The Seated Forward Bend goes a long way in releasing built up stress and negative emotions. It helps you mind feel lighter and body healthier. It boosts the circulation of blood in the head and therefore relieves vertigo symptoms. When practised regularly, this pose improves nervous health and can improve your sense of balance. It also helps reduce belly fat.

Demonstration:

Contraindications:

  • Cervical spondylitis
  • Slipped disc
  • Diarrhoea
  • Back injury
  • Asthma
