The ancient science of Ayurveda recognises sleep as one of the most crucial things for overall health. Disturbed or insufficient sleep has immediate effects – you feel grumpy, tired and unproductive the following day. Over long periods of time, it can cause serious problems including anxiety, depression, weight loss or gain, weakened immunity, reduced sex drive, high blood pressure…the list goes on. So if you’ve been facing sleep troubles for over a month, it’s a good idea to do something about it. One of the best ways is to take Ayurvedic herbs after consulting a doctor. Here are the best herbs used as Ayurvedic medicine for sleep.

Ayurvedic Medicine For Sleep: 5 Powerful Insomnia Fighting Herbs

1. Lavender

Lavender is a mild but effective Ayurvedic medicine for sound sleep. Native to Europe, this pleasant smelling herb has been used to treat insomnia for a very long time, since it has a relaxing effect on the mind. You can easily find lavender essential oil at pharmacies and wellness stores. Simply use it as an aromatherapy ingredient by adding it to your diffuser or pouring 2 drops on your pillow. Or you can also sip on a soothing cup of warm lavender tea before going to bed.

2. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a popular and powerful Ayurvedic medicine for sleep. This ancient Ayurvedic herb is an adaptogenic, meaning that it reduces the effects of stress on the body and mind. It reduces Vata aggravation which often causes severe sleeping problems, provides the body with lots of nourishment, and also boosts immunity. Ayurvedic doctors generally advise adding Ashwagandha root powder to warm milk and drinking it around one hour before going to bed. Here’s more about Ashwagandha.

3. Valerian

Next up, valerian is often used in Ayurvedic treatment for insomnia as well as anxiety. Many medicinal formulations for sleeplessness contain valerian root. Quite a strong relaxant, valerian can reduce the amount of time you take to fall asleep. It also prevents you from waking up in the middle of the night. One of the best ways to take it is in the form of warm tea. You can also take capsules. A word of caution: make sure you don’t use it on a continuous basis.

4. Chamomile

Chamomile is quite a popular Ayurvedic medicine for sleep these days. A wonderful anti-stress herb, it has been used to treat sleeplessness for centuries. Chamomile has an instant soothing effect on the body. It’s quite mild and therefore can be taken by most people. It soothes the nerves, relaxes the muscles, and can also provide mild pain relief. You can take it in the form of a tea, capsule, or liquid extract.

5. Brahmi

Last on the list of herbs used as Ayurvedic medicine for sleeping disorder is brahmi. This powerful plant is widely used in Ayurveda to treat brain and nervous system disorders. Brahmi improves blood circulation, fights anxiety, reduces fatigue, and soothes the nerves. It also boosts memory and concentration – something people with insomnia tend to face troubles with. You can take it in capsule form, or as a powder mixed in warm water or milk.
