Practising Corpse Pose a.k.a Savasana is the most invigorating thing you can do. Unlike other poses that require you to twist and turn your body, the Corpse Pose simply involves laying flat and relaxing every inch of yourself. And contrary to the opinion of many, Savasana doesn’t involve going to sleep – while doing it, you drift into a wonderful state of deep relaxation while being completely conscious. Here’s some more useful info about this asana…

Corpse Pose Benefits

1. Relaxes The Muscles

Yoga, especially for beginners, can be quite strenuous for the body. That’s why yoga routines end with Savasana, so that the muscles can relax and repair after all that contorting – which is crucial to be able to reap the benefits of the previously done poses.

2. Destresses The Mind

The most well-known benefit of Corpse Pose is stress relief. Those with anxiety and other stress disorders like insomnia can experience a huge difference with daily practice of Savasana.

3. Increases Energy

Doing this yoga pose for just 10 minutes a day can significantly boost your energy levels. That’s because it takes you into a state of extreme relaxation, which revitalises the entire body and mind. It’s something that must be tried to be experienced!

4. Reduces Vata Dosha

This is one of the best yoga positions for people with excess Vata. That’s because it has earth energy and a highly grounding effect. It also strengthens the Muladhara or Root Chakra, which tends to be among the weakest energy centres among Vata types.

5. Reduces Blood Pressure

Hypertension can be managed well with activities that relax the body. If you suffer from this condition, practise Corpse Pose; it has been found to reduce blood pressure, and thus promotes better cardiovascular health. Here are some more Ayurvedic remedies for hypertension.

6. Boosts Brain Power

Corpse Pose is great for your brain too. It is believed to be even more refreshing for your mind than an entire night’s sleep. By giving your brain some much-needed rest, it helps it function with higher alertness during the rest of the day. You are likely to have higher memory and concentration abilities after a 10 minute Savasana session.

Contraindications

Avoid or practise this with caution if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You have a back or neck injury
