A hot water bath is one of the best ways to pamper your body and mind. You might think that baths are a thing of modern times. But in ancient India, taking a bath was a healing practice that rejuvenated one’s mind and boosted strength. Ayurvedic texts have clearly mentioned the healing benefits of baths, and they also encourage the use of healing herbs and oils.

Hot Water Baths, The Ayurvedic Way

  • Ayurveda recommends hot water baths for those with Vata and Kapha constitutions. Pittas should take cold baths in the summer and warm ones in the winter.
  • In Ayurveda, a bath is usually taken after abhyanga (self-massage with oils). Vatas should use sesame oil, Pittas can use coconut oil, and safflower oil is good for Kaphas.
  • You can also place a diffuser in the bathroom, with aromatherapy oils like that of lavender, patchouli, and rose.
  • Always make sure that the water is comfortably hot.
  • Keep sipping lemon water to avoid dehydration.

Hot Bath Benefits

1. Hot Baths Control Blood Pressure.

There are immense benefits of baths for those with high blood pressure. Immersing yourself in hot water instantly relaxes the blood vessels, therefore easing the flow of blood through the body. But before using it to treat the condition, do consult your doctor.

2. Hot Baths Improve Sleep.

If you often have trouble falling asleep, take a bath. A hot bath benefits insomnia patients immensely, since it has sedating effects on the mind while releasing tension and tightness from the muscles. Adding a few drops of lavender oil to the bath also helps.

3. Hot Baths Boost Skin Health.

Next on the list of hot bath benefits is better skin. A hot water bath is a simple and effective way to remove toxins from the skin, boost blood circulation, open up the pores, and also moisturise it. It helps bring a healthy glow to your skin.

4. Hot Baths Reduce Muscle Aches.

Are you suffering from body ache? Muscle spasms? Tightness? Take a hot water bath. It will soothe all the muscles in your body, and therefore get rid of tightness, pain, and twitching. And it usually works in just a matter of 10 minutes.

5. Hot Baths Improve Blood Circulation.

If you can’t exercise because of illness or injury, you can still reap the blood-flow-boosting benefits of baths. They relax the blood vessels and increase heartbeat, thus causing more fresh blood to reach all your body parts. This produces a similar after-effect as exercise.

6. Hot Baths Help Relieve Colds And Flus.

Down with a cold? A hot tub bath could do you a lot of good. The steam helps open up your airways and also removes excess congestion in the chest. It moisturises the throat, thus soothing the itchiness. And there are benefits of baths for the headaches as well. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for healing.

7. Hot Baths Soothe Anxiety And Depression.

If you’re feeling stressed, low, burned out or irritated, pamper yourself with a nice hot water bath. By relaxing your entire body and removing toxins, hot baths soothe the mind. They can be very uplifting for the mood. Combine it with aromatherapy oils like lavender, lemon balm, sandalwood or lilac – it makes a huge difference. We reckon you give it a try!
