Time for rest and recovery ensures a life of wellness. Yet, the importance of rest is something we tend to forget. Often, we rest only after we are very tired or sick. According to Ayurveda, rest is an action. Just like eating right, exercising, and meditating. It is a ‘must do’ for optimal and overall wellbeing. We bet, once you read about these benefits of rest, you’ll be getting loads of it and your body will be thanking you!

Importance Of Rest And Recovery For Your Body, Mind & Soul

1. Rest Because Our Organs Needs To Rest.

Ayurveda emphasises a lot on the importance of rest and sleep. It is because both of these have a great impact on the quality of our life. Our body is like a constantly working machine and of course, it can’t be totally shut down, but it does need to slow down periodically and rest, so that the various organs can get repaired and function smoothly.

2. Rest To Perform Better.

Resting as and when you can helps you perform your regular tasks much better. As we rest, we release the stress and strain from our body. Our muscles and nerves relax. We return to work feeling refreshed. We can think more calmly and creatively. And we have more energy. This means we can perform better. If possible, take a 20 minute nap in the afternoon for increased productivity.

3. Rest Is Vital For Emotional Healing.

When our body is weak after an injury, surgery or illness, the affected body part needs to be rested or a wound needs to be healed. But rest and recovery can also mean recovering from an emotional angle. A trauma, shock, personal loss, broken relationship – all of these call for plenty of rest. It gives your body and mind time to process emotions and carry out the recovery process. So, emotional healing is also one of the benefits of rest we can reap.

4. Rest After Mealtimes Aids Digestion.

There are great benefits of rest after meals for digestion. It is highly recommended by Ayurveda. It directs blood to the digestive organs and nourishment is thus much better received. Many may not be fortunate enough to rest after meals due to work or study schedules, but even if it’s just for 10 minutes, rest after your meals and you’ll feel the difference.

5. Rest Increases Energy Levels.

Relaxation is crucial for maintaining stable energy levels and preventing fatigue. It lets your body regulate hormones, repair wear and tear, and rebuild its energy levels. Do not rest only after you are exhausted from some activity. Make it a habit. Fix a particular time in your daily schedule and ensure you take that time out to rest. Preferably, start unwinding after sunset so that your body can prepare for restful sleep.

Rest well and all else will fall in place!
