Skin abrasion is common in kids as well as adults. They often bleed and hurt. Upon no proper treatment, skin abrasion can get worse. Therefore, wound recovery is important so as to not attract severe infections. The initial treatment can be performed at home with natural remedies, along with taking care of the abraded skin.

What Is Abrasion?

Abrasions occur when the skin rubs against a rough surface. Kids usually get abraded skin while playing, running or falling. People often use the words abrasion and laceration interchangeably – however, both of them are different.

Abrasion vs. Laceration

Abrasion is the scrapping of the upper layer of the epidermis, whereas laceration is a tear or cut on the skin. Skin abrasion is easy to repair, but laceration may require stitches.

Home Remedies For Skin Abrasion

What is an effective skin abrasion treatment in Ayurveda? Here are some home remedies that quickly heal the abraded skin:

1. Honey Is Soothing.

Apply honey directly over the area or on the bandage. Since honey is antibacterial, it’s a quick abrasion treatment.

2. Essential Oils Are Healing.

Mix a few drops of tea tree essential oil in a teaspoon of coconut oil. Apply it over the wound to moisturize the skin and keep it free from bacteria.

3. Turmeric Is Anti-Inflammatory.

Turmeric is antiseptic as well as anti-inflammatory in nature. So, apply a turmeric paste on the affected area for a natural and pain-free abrasion treatment.

Abrasion Treatment – Caring For The Wound

1. Clean The Wound.

Before you start cleaning the wound, make sure you thoroughly wash your hands or else it increases the chances of infection. Put the abraded skin under lukewarm water for a few minutes to remove any dust particles.

2. Disinfect The Wound.

After cleaning the abraded skin, apply petroleum jelly or any mild antibiotic cream to prevent further damage. Do not use the cream if it reacts or leaves red rashes.

3. Cover The Skin Abrasion.

Covering the wound with a clean bandage is the best skin abrasion treatment to prevent infections and aid faster healing. However, keep changing the dressing at a frequency depending upon the damage caused by the abrasion.

4. Do Not Scratch.

The presence of crusts is significant as it’s a sign of a new skin growing beneath. But, a lot of kids scratch the affected area which results in the removal of scabs. So, avoid scratching.

5. Check For Signs Of Infection.

Signs like pain, warmth, swelling, pus, and redness are a few signs of infection. If the abraded skin does not heal despite proper care, visit a doctor.
