One on either side of the lower back, the two bean shaped kidneys under the rib cage are one of the body’s most vital organs. The kidneys are small in size but perform powerful and important functions.  They cleanse the body of toxins, filter the blood, manage fluid levels, and maintain electrolyte balance. They help in ensuring a comfortable and consistent environment inside the body. But most people neglect kidney care – often because they are not exactly aware of how to take good care of the kidneys. Let us find out how to improve kidney function so that we can lead a healthy life.

Symptoms Of Kidney Issues

  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Increased and painful urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Swollen face
  • Swollen hands, ankles, and feet
  • A bulging abdomen
  • Puffy eyes

Kidney Care: How To Do It

1. Take Ayurvedic Cleansing Herbs.

Ayurvedic cleansing herbs can be of immense help to maintain good kidney health. Ancient Ayurvedic texts have mentioned specific herbs that cleanse and detoxify naturally.

  • Brahmi: It is a natural kidney detoxifier and can eliminate Pitta from the urinary channels.
  • Manjistha: This herb has antioxidant properties and supports kidney health. It also has a diuretic effect and can protect from kidney stones.
  • Varuna: This blood purifying herb can clear the urinary channels and get rid of unwanted deposits that can cause inflammation and stones.
  • Celery root: Being a natural diuretic, it flushes out toxins by increasing urination.
  • Parsley: This aromatic herb supports kidney function by flushing out excess fluids from the body and bringing down the kidney’s toxin levels.
  • Ginger: Extensively used since ages for its healing properties, ginger reduces the growth of bacteria inside the kidneys.
  • Turmeric: The curcumin in turmeric keeps kidneys healthy by preventing growth and spread of microbes. It is a time-tested cure for kidney infections.

2. Avoid Pill Popping.

When in physical pain, many get tempted to pop in OTC pain killers like ibuprofen or advil. If these are taken often, over a prolonged period of time, they can cause severe kidney damage. Unless you are suffering from severe chronic pain, avoid pills. Instead, look for natural pain relievers that Ayurveda offers.

3. Drink Moderate Amounts Of Water.

Drinking too much water loads the kidneys and weakens them over time. They will not be able to handle excess water and this can cause unwanted kidney problems. On the other hand, too little water can cause problems like kidney stones. So maintain balance – 2 litres a day is generally a moderate amount.

4. Do Not Ignore The Call Of Nature.

How to improve kidney function? Relieve yourself when you have to. Do not hold back and stress out the kidneys. It will affect your kidney health in the long run. Listen to whatever your precious body tells you. Just like you don’t stifle your yawn or sneeze, don’t stop from answering the call of nature.

5. Eat Kidney-Friendly Foods.

Another interesting and natural way on how to improve kidney function is to eat kidney-friendly foods. Apples, blueberries, garlic, olive oil, strawberries, spinach, kale, and sweet potatoes are considered good for the kidneys. On the other hand, avoid excess salt, alcohol, processed food, artificially flavoured, and stale foods.

6. Try Yoga For Kidney Care.

  • Janu Shirshasana (Head To Knee Pose) involves wrings out the kidneys and gets rid of stale blood.
  • Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) promote detoxification.
  • Ardha Matsyendrasana (Sitting Half Spinal Twist) stimulates the kidneys.
  • Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath) stimulates kidneys through pulsating navel movements.
  • Naukasana (Boat Pose) strengthens and stimulates the abdominal organs.

Now that you have learnt a few tips on good kidney health, we hope you will take care of that precious pair and live healthy!
