Personally, the winter sun is my favourite. This season is in itself a pursuit of happiness. It makes my soul feel fresh and alive. But unfortunately, my skin doesn’t respond the same way. And this is a relatable experience during winters for most of us. The skin tends to become dull and dry. It drops the moisture and lustre. But fortunately, the comprehensive system of Ayurveda has solutions to almost all our dilemmas (winter skin care tips). And just because we are all wrapped under the winter woollies, it doesn’t mean that we have a reason to neglect our skin!

    Winter skin care tips

Follow these simple and brilliant winter skin care tips for being body beautiful every time:

    • Adapt to the habit of oiling each morning. This keeps your skin plump and glowing.
    • Try abhyanga – the ayurvedic self-massage before your bath. It lubricates & protects your skin giving the complexion a luminous sheen along with a younger looking skin. This effectively helps to prevent dry skin in winter.
    • Be sure to drink warm or room temperature water each day rather than the cold or refrigerated one that aggravates Vata.
    • You can ideally boil the water in morning and store it in a thermos for drinking throughout the day. This helps to soothe your Vata, hydrate your skin, and curb overeating at the same time.
    • Exercise outdoors when the weather allows. Do this at least thrice a week and 30-minutes (minimum) each day.
    • Try to include ghee in your daily diet.
    • Consume nuts like walnuts and blanched almonds.
    • Also increase the intake of sunflower, sesame, and pumpkin seeds.
    • Add ground flaxseeds, fresh coconut and avocado to your diet.
    • Don’t forget to eat green leafy vegetables as they help to purify your skin.
    • Choose organic and choose fresh.

    Suggestions for different skin types

Below are a few tips for nourishing your skin according to its type and ensuring a winter beauty care routine:

Individuals of Vata Constitution (or during cold and windy conditions) –

    Lifestyle and Dietary Suggestions:

    • Ensure daily sesame oil massage.
    • Keep skin covered with natural fabrics like wool or silk.
    • Light & enjoyable exercises are recommended.
    • Usage of rose or lavender essence in your bath is advisable.
    • Eat food that’s cooked with cumin, coriander, and turmeric.
    • Make sure the food is well-cooked and includes plenty of green leafy vegetables.

Individuals of Pitta Constitution (or during freezing but not windy conditions) –

    Lifestyle and Dietary Suggestions:

    • Ensure daily massage with cooling & soothing oils.
    • Active exercising is recommended.
    • Avoid excessive exposure to the sun.
    • Try and avoid hot spicy foods.
    • Include a lot of sweet and juicy fruits in your diet.
    • Prepare your food with coriander, cumin, and fennel.

Individuals of Kapha Constitution (or during cold and damp conditions) –

    Lifestyle and Dietary Suggestions:

    • Make sure to drink warm water throughout the day.
    • A warm oil full-body massage is recommendable.
    • Exfoliate your non-facial skin periodically with a loofah (make sure to keep the loofah clean and germ-free).
    • Avoid skipping your meals.
    • Prepare your food with black pepper, ginger, turmeric, coriander and cumin.

Home remedies for preventing dry skin problems in winter

You can make use of these winter skin remedies to get rid of the winter skin woes:

    • Apply a paste of mashed papaya & banana mixed with honey on your dry skin to help it rejuvenate and moisturise. These ingredients act as a natural antioxidant and anti-aging agents and prove to be amongst the best winter skin care tips.
    • Make a paste with 1 tbsp almond powder and 2 tbsp raw milk to apply on your face for 10 minutes. This exfoliates your skin making it supple and also reduces the dryness. The pack is rich in Vitamin E along with other essential fatty acids.
    • Use equal amounts of yogurt and buttermilk for cleansing your skin, soothing the dullness and for moisturising the entire body. This is a simple and great remedy for getting glowing skin in winters.
    • Glycerin can also be used to restore the softness of your skin. It acts as a wonderful moisturiser, cleanser and toner leaving a calming and emollient effect.
    • Use Petroleum jelly for healing excessive dry skin as it quickly gets absorbed by the skin. Apply it on dry lips and chapped lips.
    • Make use of half mashed avocado with 2 tbsp honey as a face pack. This helps protect your skin from radical damage and dehydration.
    • Mash a banana and apply as a mask. It helps nourishes your skin in winters and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
    • Liberally apply coconut/ sunflower oil as a body lotion to naturally moisturize dry skin in winter.

So now you can stay happy and beautiful even in these dry winters.
