  • 1. Apples
  • 2. Berries
  • 3. Spinach
  • 4. Carrots
  • 5. Flaxseeds
  • 6. Water

Being the organs that help you take in oxygen, your lungs are obviously among the most crucial organs you have. Unfortunately in today’s world, there are so many toxins floating in the air that lung health is on the decline – and death due to respiratory diseases is on the rise. But the good news is that there are ways to protect yourself from air pollution and keep lung disease at bay. Apart from making healthy lifestyle choices, your diet can contribute excellently to a better respiratory system. Here are some examples of super healthy food for lungs.

6 Examples Of Super Healthy Food For Lungs

1. Apples

Studies have found that apples enhance respiratory health. This is possibly because these popular fruits contain high amounts of flavonoids that can cleanse and protect your lungs from damage and diseases. We think apples are great because they’re easy to carry in your bag to work and munch on during the day. You can eat them or juice them for better lung health.

2. Berries

Berries are super foods because they are loaded with antioxidants. Your lungs like antioxidants. That’s because these nutrients fight free radicals – toxins that cause severe damage to the cells and tissues. In this way, they protect your lungs from disease, keep infections away, boost immunity, and help your lungs work to their full capacity. Eat plenty of acai berries, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, and cranberries.

3. Spinach

Spinach is one of the best foods for lungs. This is mainly due to the fact that it has loads of folate (Vitamin B9), which can help protect lungs from a variety diseases, including asthma and bronchitis. Lack of the vital nutrient is also linked to breathlessness. Half a cup of boiled spinach provides you with around 30% of your daily folate requirement. Other rich sources are black eyed peas, fortified cereal, asparagus, lettuce, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. As you see, greens  tend to be good sources of this vitamin.

4. Carrots

Carrots are another super healthy food for lungs. These delicious veggies are packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that maintains healthy immunity, can keep certain kinds of cancers at bay, and can even slow down ageing of lungs. Carrots also contain other antioxidants like vitamin C and lycopene. Other such lung healthy foods containing beta carotene are apricots, peaches, sweet potatoes, and melons.

5. Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are among the top sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have found that Omega-3 fatty acids can help fight bacterial infections in the lungs. They can combat the adverse effects of pollution on the respiratory system. Magnesium is another crucial nutrient for lung health that flaxseeds have plenty of. Flaxseeds also have anti-inflammatory properties. But watch out for these side effects.

6. Water

Last on our list is often overlooked but crucial – water. If you want to detox any part of your body, you cannot do it without drinking enough of water. When you are properly hydrated, your lungs can clean themselves through mucous, and your blood has better flow as well as oxygen content. The generally recommended daily amount is around 3.7 litres for men and 2.7 litres for women.
