It is really satisfying to have a home full of happy people, reduced negativity, clean air to breath and a feeling of rejuvenation! But how does one achieve the aura of basking positivity along with noticeably improved health and wellbeing? The answer in itself is serene, calming and clean – air purifying house plants! You may find many ways to combat air pollution through effective kitchen solutions including neem, jaggery, tulsi, turmeric and/ or Triphala but oxygen generating indoor plants also prove efficient. These are definitely long-lasting options to purify the air of your home or workplace and even substantially improve the health. Because who wouldn’t be in love with a living space that feels so fresh and washes away all the depressing thoughts.

But the question arises as to which are the most effective air purifying house plants? And how to be sure of what the plant thrives for, the space required and climatic conditions? Indoor plants have endless therapeutic benefits for removing the toxins from the air. And each of them has their own personality along with different growing conditions. So here is the answer. We bring to you four indoor plants that clean the air and remove toxins and are beneficial houseplants.

1. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue – Spikes to Purify the Air

As the name suggests, the plant has pointed tips along with sharp and sturdy leaves. With around 70 different species of the mother-in-law’s tongue (sansevieria), it makes an excellent decorative plant as well as an incredible air purifier. It is also known as the snake tongue or devil’s tongue plant and is a native to Madagascar, Africa and Southern Asia. The plant not only lowers the humidity in your home but even produces a copious amount of oxygen throughout the time. This way you function efficiently during the day and also sleep peacefully at night. You can place it anywhere in your home be it your bedroom or living room as it’s considered amongst the best plants for indoor air purification. It’s a desert plant flexible enough to go for without water for weeks together and flourishes in just any climate.

Give your mother-in-law’s tongue a spacious pot to grow and a little water to cope with the conditions. It is super classic, all easy and one of the best air purifying house plants!

2. Chinese Money Plant or the Pass-It-On

The pancake, pass it on or the Chinese money plant is easy to care for houseplant that’s not only perfect for minimalist decoration but it also takes care of you like you do for it. Having time-travelled, the Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides) is remarkable and eye-catching. It has flat and round leaves that are shiny and thick like dark green pancakes. Plus the leaves balance on thin, long and red stems. But this isn’t the most dynamic air purifier and you will need to have lots of these to actually feel the difference. Luckily, just set the offshoots in other plant pots and you are good to go! The Chinese money plant along with Epipremnum aureum (money plant native to Australia) symbolise as wealth & prosperity boosters in the Chinese system of Feng Shui.

Grow the Chinese money plant under bright indirect light with good drainage system and water only when completely dry. Your air purifying house plants not only give out fresh air but also bring in wealth!

3. Peace Lilly – The Rainforest Queen

Being a deep and forest green plant the Peace Lilly (Spathiphyllum) blooms some really beautiful white flowers. It’s not only pretty on the outside but works to create a satisfying and purifying atmosphere around it. Peace Lillies prove to be great cleansers that effectively remove the common indoor pollutants. There also are room freshener plants for you home. And as you start feeling productive, take a deep breath and thank the Peace Lilly leaves. But remember to keep the plant away from your pet dog/ cat or babies and toddlers. Also, understand that it’s time for a triumphant revival when the Peace Lilly leaves start to droop.

The plant was once the queen of South American rainforests due to which it can withstand difficult conditions, require plentiful water every week and grows between 15⁰ to 23⁰ Celsius temperatures.

4. Bamboo Palm

This is amongst those air purifying plants that you would want to keep in your bedroom. Some people also call it as the Butterfly Palm and it’s another tough one native to the Madagascar. It does an excellent job in the indoors for purifying the air. The Bamboo Palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) is a natural humidifier that produces a litre of ambient water in every 24 hours. This characteristic makes the plant well-suited for dry climates. It’s especially beneficial for those with breathing troubles. Bamboo Palm’s can rapidly grow and stretch up to 20 feet in height. But limiting their vertical reach by retaining in smaller pots make them confined. The plant is pet-friendly but is susceptible to spider mites which require special attention to avoid any insect infestations.

Keep the bamboo palm under bright and filtered light. Water them frequently maintaining the moisture. Just don’t let the plant swim in water and dump the excess.

And at the end, when it comes to having such air purifying house plants, “the more the better” rule also works well.  Every plant you have pumps out fresh oxygen and clears the harmful pollutants present inside your home. So if you are ready then upgrade your indoor air quality by getting the best indoor plants for air purification!
