Anyone who’s had kidney stones would tell you that they can cause excruciating pain. This condition effects a significant chunk of the population – mostly men. Kidney stones result from the accumulation of substances like sodium, calcium, and uric acids in urine, which the body is unable to flush out. These hard lumps lead to awful symptoms like severe pain, vomiting as well as frequent, bloody and painful urination. Here are some remedies that can be used in Ayurvedic treatment for kidney stones.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Kidney Stones

1. Lemon Juice + Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Yes, it sounds like a pretty odd combination. But lemon juice with honey makes a potent remedy for kidney stones that are still small. Lemon contains citric acid that dissipates the stones. Extra virgin olive oil aids the process by providing the required lubrication for the stone to leave your body. It generally takes around a week to work. And the earlier you begin the treatment, the better.

Here’s what to do: Add quarter cup of lemon juice to the same quantity of extra virgin olive oil. Drink it and then have another cup of water. Do it first thing in the morning and then twice later during the day.

2. Lemon + Water

A simple preparation of lemon juice with warm water has proved one of the best home remedies for kidney stone removal. While drinking loads of water in itself is super-effective in dissolving and flushing it out, lemon juice mixed with it boosts its healing potential. The citric acid in lemon supports your body’s attempts to rid itself of the stone. And it reduces the acidity of urine.

Here’s what to do: Just add 2 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice to 6 ounces of water. Drink it twice a day.

3. Coconut Water

Coconut water is great to use in Ayurvedic treatment for kidney stone. It has been found to dilute urine, help break down the painful stones, increase the amount of urine passed, as well as relieve the burning. Moreover, coconut water supports the process of detoxification in the body. When used in combination with other home remedies, it can speed up your healing process. And coconut offers a variety of other health benefits.

Here’s what to do: Drink fresh coconut water thrice a week.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

While it may not taste very pleasant, apple cider vinegar is a well-known Ayurvedic medicine for kidney stones. That’s because just like lemons, this drink has citric acid, which is great for dissolving kidney stones and helping your body get rid of them. You may also be able to use apple cider vinegar as a pain relieving remedy.

Here’s what to do: Warm up a cup of water and add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to it. If you don’t have diabetes, you can add a tiny bit of honey – it will make it easier to put down your throat. Drink this once a day.

5. Holy Basil

Also called ‘tulsi’ in Ayurveda, this herb is a powerful kidney stone Ayurvedic medicine. Holy basil has acetic acid which enables the dissolution of those stones. It also has relaxing and pain relieving effects on the body. To prevent reoccurrence, holy basil can help regulative the levels of uric acid in the body. It promotes detoxification and ensures better overall kidney health.

Here’s what to do: Prepare some soothing tulsi tea by adding 3-4 fresh tulsi leaves to a cup of water. Let it simmer for 8-10 minutes and then drink warm. You could also add a wee bit of honey to taste if you don’t have diabetes.
