You experience heartburn when the acids inside your belly move up your food pipe, leading to burps, ache and discomfort, and a distinct feeling of ‘burning’ in your chest. While most people experience mild heartburns at some point in their lives, it’s not something you want to ignore – since it can cause things like ulcers, bleeding, more severe pain, and damage to your food pipe. If you’re in need of a home remedy for heartburn, here are some you can try after consulting your doctor.

Need a Home Remedy for Heartburn? Try These.

1. Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe Vera is one of the widely used Ayurvedic home remedies for heart burn since the herb has potent soothing properties. You may already know that it’s quite effective for skin burns; luckily, it can also soothe a heartburn. Aloe Vera reduces inflammation in the body. So, get yourself the purest aloe Vera you can find, and drink half a cup before you eat. You might be interested in reading about the other health benefits of aloe Vera.

2. Chew Sugar Free Gum

We were a bit surprised to find out that just chewing gum could help when you’ve got a heartburn! Well, studies have found that it can be an effective home remedy for acidity and heartburn, since it helps your mouth generate more saliva. With more saliva, your body can better flush down the acid that has risen up your food pipe. And saliva is alkaline in nature, so it helps bring the balances you need in your stomach. It’s quite good for relieving the symptoms. Once you finish your food, simply grab a piece of sugar free gum and chew it for half an hour.

3. Sip on Ginger Tea

Ginger is one of Ayurveda’s favourite stomach-improving herbs. It has been long used to successfully treat a range of digestive issues from motion sickness and gas to more severe conditions like IBS. Back to ginger for heartburn. Some studies have found that ginger may be effective in treatment for heartburn since it takes care of acid reflux, nausea, and inflammation. It’s great to prevent acid reflux in general. You can just chew on a piece of ginger or, a less intense-tasting option is to sip on ginger tea. Chop and add half a ginger to 1.5 cup of water. Simmer it for 10 minutes and then drink it about half an hour before eating. But watch out – more than 2 cups a day can worsen heartburn. Talk to your doctor about these side effects of ginger.

4. Licorice Tea

Heartburn is linked to aggravated Pitta (heat in the body). Thanks to its cooling effect, licorice root is considered an excellent home remedy for heartburn in Ayurveda. This herb can protect your gastrointestinal tract from damage as well as tackle excess gas. You can make yourself some licorice tea up to thrice a day. Here’s how: add a cup of water to the pot and add 1.5 teaspoons of licorice root. Boil and then, simmer it for 3-4 minutes. Strain it out and drink warm. Do this around 20 minutes before you eat.
