But, it’s possible for anyone to overdo its consumption and face the dangers of chia seeds. Yes, you keep hearing about how amazing chia seeds are, but what about the chia seeds side effects? Give these a thought…

Chia Seeds Side Effects

1. Dangers Of Chia Seeds Include Gastrointestinal Issues

Constipation and diarrhea are two common gut-related problems you face when your chia seed consumption goes too high. Fiber doesn’t work well for all. Eating chia seeds with a lot of fluids makes them good for digestion. But, on the other side, it can lead to unreleased nutrients, feeling bloated, hardened stools, stomach ache, and gas.

2. Chia Seeds Can Cause Allergic Reactions

If you have a nut or seed allergy, you might also be allergic to chia seeds. Their high protein and fiber content can induce symptoms of skin rashes, watery eyes, dizziness, swelling in the tongue, hoarseness, difficulty in breathing and vomiting.

3. Chia Seeds Side Effects Deter Your Blood Sugar Levels

While chia seeds may be helpful in the regulation of your glucose levels, they can also overstimulate drugs you take for diabetes control. Chia seeds can potentially react with your medications. Hence, moderate intake is the ultimate recommendation.

4. Chia Seeds Can Lead To Low Blood Pressure And Prevent Blood Clotting

High Omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds are a natural blood thinner that can lead to lower blood pressure. This is a critical condition in case you already are on preventive drugs or deal with such an ailment. So, proceed with caution and keep the chia seeds side effects in mind.

5. Chia Seeds Can Choke You

How? They can soak water up to 27 times their weight when dry. This phenomenon can occur while chia seeds are in your food pipe. They can expand in size, form a sticky mass and choke your esophagus. So, this is the reason a presoak is always advisable.

How To Eat Chia Seeds?

Well, how to eat chia seeds is quite a matter of personal preference. But, you can add them to your morning smoothie, sprinkle on your salads or mix some in yogurt. Make a chia pudding, pre-workout chia drink or some crunchy blueberry-chia muffins. You can have them raw, cooked, preferably soaked, roasted or sauteed.

But, how much chia seeds to use per day? In general or if you are fiber intolerant, about 20 grams (1.5 tbsp) twice daily is a safe consumption amount.
