As your eyes are precious jewels of the body, it is your responsibility to take good care of them. Eyes have the role of enabling your interaction with the outer world. Therefore, they should be kept in a healthy state. But eye problems are increasingly common these days. A panchakarma treatment called Akshi Tarpanam, also called Netra Vashti, comes to your rescue. ‘Netra’ means eyes and ‘Vashti’ means to retain something inside.

What is Akshi Tarpanam (Netra Vashti)?

The process of retaining dedicated essential oils or organic ghee in the eyes for a fixed time period is Akshi Tarpanam (Akshi means eyes and Tarpanam means nourishment). Cow’s ghee is the best choice as it helps improve the overall eye health.

When Do You Need The Akshi Tarpanam Panchakarma Treatment?

Here are the symptoms you must watch out for and accordingly opt for a professional Akshi Tarpanam therapy:

    • Vision impairment
    • Eye injury
    • Conjunctivitis
    • Dry or watery eye
    • Excessive pain
    • Stiffness
    • Glaucoma
    • Losing eyelashes

Akshi Tarpanam (Netra Vashti) Panchakarma Treatment Procedure

This is a professional treatment where a person is first made to comfortably lie down with their eyes closed. A gentle forehead massage is given, after which a dough frame is set around the eyes. Next, an expert pours some lukewarm ghee into the frame and fills it till the eyebrows. Once the eyes are fully covered, the patient has to slowly keep blinking as it benefits the insides.

After 15-20 minutes, the ghee is drained with the help of a cotton ball, and the expert gently removes the band. Ayurveda specialists recommend at least a 7-day treatment after the sunset.

Preparation and Application Of The Band

Black lentil (urad dal) flour is kneaded with warm water and a band-like dough is prepared. Once firm, it is then placed around the eyes to act as a protective wall and restrict the oil from dripping. To further prevent any spillage, the dough is secured with urad dal paste and two small tank-like shapes are formed.
