Eye Floaters: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Small lines or dots in the field of your vision are called eye floaters and these move along with the movement of your eyes. It is pretty common to see this floating material and it even goes unnoticed sometimes. However, if they become prominent and distort your vision, proper eye floater treatment is required.

What Are Eye Floaters?

When you rub your eyes vigorously, do you see some strands that flow from one area to the other? They tend to blur out when you try and focus on them. At times, you can also see shapes other than thread-like. This floating material seems to be like some grayish pollutant inside the eyes that’s impossible to focus on.

Any change that comes in the fluid of our eyes leads to eye floaters that’s a cluster of microscopic fibers. Usually a temporary situation, eye floaters can also be a harmful and lasting phenomenon.

What Causes Eye Floaters?

  • General inflammation
  • Pollutants in the eye
  • Nearsightedness
  • Blocked blood vessels
  • Retinal detachment
  • Rubbing eyes vigorously
  • Flashing lights
  • Trauma
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Age-related damage

What Are The Eye Floaters Symptoms?

You can see eye floaters in different shapes. These move with your eyes and dart away when you try to focus on them. The symptoms may include seeing:

  • Moving dots
  • Thread-like small strands
  • Squiggly lines
  • Rings
  • Cobwebs

Eye Floaters Treatment

1. Use Sunglasses When Going Outside

To prevent seeing excessive eye floaters, wear sunglasses to avoid the harmful effects of UV radiations. It also gives your eyes a break during a prolonged exposure.

2. Practice Essential Eye Exercises

Focusing eye exercises are especially beneficial for the condition. Even stress relieving ones can slow down the development of eye floaters. A simple clockwise and anti-clockwise rolling movement of the eyes can improve the situation.

3. Adopt Healthy Habits

  • Use a natural eyewash like Triphala to flush out any irritants from the eyes.
  • Stop touching your eyes without any reason.
  • Wash your face and eyes with plain water at least twice daily.
  • Do not strain your eyes. Take frequent breaks while working on a laptop or computer.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption as it degenerates macular health.
  • Limit smoking, since it can easily lead to toxic build up in the body.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Proper water intake lowers the chances of developing any health issues in the body.
  • Consume foods that load your body with antioxidants. This will protect you from common vision problems, even cataract.
