Gotu kola has been used in traditional Ayurvedic, Indonesian as well as Chinese medicines for ages. In Ayurveda, it is known as ‘brahmi’, meaning ‘Godlike’. And in Chinese, it means ‘fountain of life’. Now, there surely must be something exceptional about this herb since it has earned itself such fantastic names. It is a tridoshic herb, meaning it balances all doshas. And while all the parts of the gotu kola plant are valuable, the leaves are most prized. Let’s find out some of the gotu kola benefits.

Gotu Kola Benefits

1. It Improves Brain Function.

Ayurveda recommends the gotu kola herb as a medhya rasayana (rejuvenative) for memory, concentration, alertness, and clarity. Its roots and leaves have the ability to help improve neurotransmitter functioning. This plant also offers neuroprotective benefits.

2. It Aids Meditation.

Yogis are said to use the gotu kola herb as a meditation aid. According to them, it balances the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This balance helps the nervous system function without any blockages and improves cognitive abilities. Since it enhances spirituality, they call it the ‘enlightenment herb’.

3. It Improves Skin Health.

Gotu kola is a sought-after herb by cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies. It is antioxidant-rich and with the saponins, this herb has the ability to treat various skin conditions like acne, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Topically it can heal skin ulcers and reduce wrinkles, lighten blemishes, delay signs of ageing and improve the varna or quality of the skin.

4. It Is Good For Hair.

The benefits of this herb also include improving the texture of your crowning glory because it strengthens blood vessels and boosts blood circulation. This results in healthy skin and scalp. Massages with gotu kola hair oil prevent hair fall, dullness, and premature greying. This herb gives stronger, thicker, and longer hair.

5. It Reduces Stress Levels.

One of the gotu kola benefits is in its powerful stress relieving abilities. It raises the levels of the “feel good” neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, and lowers  levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It can eliminate anxiety, depression, mental fatigue, and insomnia. A wonderful Ayurvedic remedy for stress disorders.

6. It Heals Wounds And Scars.

The gotu kola herb is anti-inflammatory and it also accelerates collagen production. It is known to increase blood supply to tissues and can encourage new skin growth. Which means that if there is a wound, scar or lesion, gotu kola speeds up the rate at which your body repairs tissues.

7. It Promotes Detoxification.

Detoxification is very important, especially these days since we are exposed to tons of toxins in the environment – even through the food and water we consume to survive! Herbs like gotu kola help cleanse the body and boost health. Gotu kola is a mild diuretic. It helps the body flush out excess salts, toxins, and fats though urination. This helps the kidneys get rid of unwanted matter very quickly and easily.
