More and more people today are shifting from conventional products to natural, healthier alternatives. In fact, people have now even started to make their own toothpaste at home. Why? Because it keeps disease-causing chemicals found in conventional toothpastes out of your system, and you can choose from the best ingredients. Coconut oil, which also happens to be a beauty tonic, is great for your teeth and gums. Here are some reasons why you might also want to start using coconut oil toothpaste.

Why Use Coconut Oil Toothpaste?

1. It Gets Rid of Bacteria

Build up of bacteria is the last thing you want happening inside your mouth – it leads to foul breath, cavities, decaying gums and dental disease. If you’ve noticed this happening, reach out for a bottle of coconut oil. This oil is the highest source of a fatty acid called Lauric acid. This is a very potent substance; it kills bacteria inside the mouth, giving your teeth and gums a thorough cleanse.

2. It Improves Gum Health

You may already know that build up of germs causes or aggravates all gum diseases. With coconut oil, you won’t have to worry about this happening to you – recent studies on coconut oil for gums show promising results. Being antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, coconut oil toothpaste can get rid of germ build up on your gums and soothe irritation. In fact, it works rather quickly – you might see a significant drop in plaque as well as inflammation in just a matter of weeks. If using it as toothpaste doesn’t sound all that appealing to you, you could even simply massage coconut oil onto your gums for around 15 minutes daily. Works just as well.

3. It Whitens Teeth

One of the things that make a great smile is a healthy set of pearly white teeth. If you’ve been drinking lots of coffee lately, chances are that your teeth have started to look a bit yellow. If you’re looking for an easy-to-use and sure-shot remedy, go no further. Coconut oil teeth whitening is delightfully effective…it can leave you looking like you’ve just come back from the dentist. Several studies have suggested that it reduces yellowness of teeth while improving overall dental hygiene.

4. It’s Chemical Free

Have you ever stopped to think about what chemicals could be entering your body through your toothpaste? Over the counter toothpastes are loaded with chemicals that have been found to wreck havoc in the body over time – causing hormonal imbalance, weakened immunity, irritated skin, digestive problems, premature ageing…well, the list goes on! Some of these chemicals are methylparaben, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and triclosan. Do your precious body a favour and check for such ingredients in your toothpaste – if you find them, it’s wise to switch to a healthier option.

5. It’s Super Easy to Make…

What you need:

  • Half a cup of coconut oil (preferrably organic!)
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • Cinnamon or peppermint essential oil

What to do:

  • Begin by heating the coconut oil until it liquifies.
  • Add the baking soda.
  • Stir until it forms a paste.
  • Add the essential oil.
  • Cool it down and add it to a container.

Done! To use it, you can use a spoon to apply it on your toothbrush, or simply dip it in the paste.
