Not all cholesterol is bad. This waxy substance is important for essential bodily functions like digestion and cell membrane formation. But when your levels of low density cholesterol, also known as LDL or bad cholesterol, rise, you could be in trouble – a number of cardiovascular diseases result from it. But high density cholesterol, also called HDL or good cholesterol, protects your heart. Food can play an important role in maintaining their balance. Here are some juices for high cholesterol worth discussing with your doctor about.

5 Juices For High Cholesterol

1. Pomegranate Juice

First on our list of juices for high cholesterol is pomegranate juice. It is significantly richer than other fruits in polyphenol, which is an antioxidant that reduces LDL cholesterol levels and improves the health of your cardiovascular system.

Take the skin off a pomegranate. Add it to your blender. Once it reaches a liquid consistency, pour it out and drink fresh.

2. Orange Juice

Orange juice, as you may already know, has a plethora of health benefits. A bunch of studies now suggest that it may also help improve cholesterol status – supposedly because of its vitamin C and flavonoid content. One study found that plant sterol fortified orange juice was successful in reducing LDL cholesterol levels in patients with high cholesterol.

Peel the skin off 2 medium sized oranges. Add them to your blender and give ‘em a whirl. Alternatively, you can find a plant sterol fortified orange juice.

3. Pineapple Juice

A glass of delicious fresh pineapple juice may help reduce cholesterol, according to a study conducted on rats that observed reduced levels of lipoproteins. Pineapples contain bromelain, which has been found to reduces the amounts of fat in blood. Though more research is needed to back up claims, pineapple juice is certainly a healthier choice as compared to artificial beverages.

Simply slice up a pineapple and give it a good blend. Strain the juice into a glass and drink fresh.

4. Ginger + Lemon Juice

This is a good one to discuss with your doctor about juicing to reduce cholesterol. A number of studies have found that ginger can lower cholesterol levels, improve blood circulation, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Lemon, being high in vitamin C as well as soluble fibre, can reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

Add 100 grams of ginger to a cup of water. Bring it to a boil and then let it simmer for 3-4 minutes. Pour out and squeeze half a lemon into it. Stir well and drink warm.

5. Apple juice

Last on our list of juices for high cholesterol is the ever-so-yummy apple juice. Apples, according to many studies, fight the effects of LDL cholesterol on the body that result in plaque in arteries. They also contain soluble fibre that enables your body to flush out more LDL cholesterol.

Slice up an apple and add it to your blender. When it reaches a liquid consistency, pour it out and drink fresh.

Tips To Lower Your Cholesterol Levels

  • Steer clear from foods that contain saturated and trans-fat, like beef and butter.
  • On the other hand, eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, like flaxseeds.
  • Use healthier oils like olive oil.
  • Avoid fried food.
  • Eat loads of fresh fruits and veggies.
  • Eat foods rich in insoluble fibre like broccoli, onion, celery, and dark leafy greens.
  • Be active everyday – half an hour to 1 hour of physical activity will do you good.
  • Practice stress reducing activities like meditation.
  • Monitor your cholesterol levels frequently and keep in touch with your doctor.
