Yoga For Neck Pain – 5 Poses With Video Demonstrations

The neck is one of the areas in the body that carry most amounts stress – due to emotions as well as posture. Neck pain is highly common these days primarily due to the heavy use of computers, phones, and tablets. Constantly looking downwards at a screen leads to stiffness as well as pain. Luckily, there are many yoga poses that can help loosen up the neck and relieve pain. If you suffer from an ailment or have been injured, consult a doctor. If your neck pain is mild and posture-related, you can learn these yoga poses.

Yoga For Neck Pain – 5 Poses With Video Demonstrations

1. Child’s Pose a.k.a Balasana

The Child’s Pose is immensely relaxing for the body and mind. It not only relieves stiffness and pain in the neck, but also releases built up stress and negativity. This poses stretches the neck and back gently but effectively.

How it’s done:

Contraindications:

  • Pregnancy
  • Diarrhea
  • Injury or pain in the knees
  • Injury or pain in the ankles

2. Cat and Cow Pose a.k.a Marjariasana and Bitilasana

Cat and Cow are two very easy yoga asanas that can help heal neck pain. They involve stretching and lengthening the neck, and are quite gentle and slow. Together, they also stretch and release stress from the shoulder, chest, and the entire spine. Just like the Child’s Pose, these two asanas are very relaxing.

How it’s done:

Contraindications:

  • Neck injury
  • Injury or pain in the knees
  • Injury or pain in the wrists

3. Seated Twist Pose a.k.a Ardha Matsyendrasana

The Seated Twist is often taught in yoga for neck pain. As the name suggests, it twists the entire spinal column, making both the back and neck more strong and flexible. It gives your neck a good stretch and releases tension from the area. It’s quite energising, and is also said to improve breathing capacity.

How it’s done:

Contraindications:

  • Injury in the back
  • Injury or pain in the knees

4. Fish Pose a.k.a Matsyasana

Next on the list of yoga exercises for neck pain is the Fish Pose. It stretches and gets rid of tightness in the shoulders, throat, and neck. It also opens up the chest and aids deep breathing, which is great for refreshing the mind and elevating energy levels. A fun fact: when done perfectly, it can help you float on water – hence the name!

How it’s done:

Contraindications:

  • Migraine
  • Insomnia
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Back pain or injury
  • Recent surgery

5. Corpse Pose a.k.a Savasana

Every asana session ends with the Corpse Pose, where you relax every part of your body. The Corpse Pose is wonderful for tackling stress, a common cause of neck pain. You could also roll a towel and place it under your neck while doing this pose. And try not to fall asleep! 😉

Low blood pressure
