Eating before bed is nothing less than consuming poison especially when its late-night. Ayurveda advises people to eat a light dinner at least two hours before sleeping. There are certain foods that Ayurveda disapproves of eating at night. But, there also are some of the best foods to eat at night and not feel guilty. So, here we detail a bit about the worst foods to eat at dinnertime and also the best foods to eat before bed.

Best Foods To Eat At Night

1. Green Vegetables

The best foods to eat at night are green veggies like cauliflower, spinach,  broccoli, cabbage, and cucumber. If you are eating before bed, then have these foods for full nutrition. Potato and carrots are the worst foods to eat at night. You can read the benefits of leafy green veggies here.

2. Seasonal Fruits

Eating at night especially after 8 pm is not advisable. Always eat at least two hours before bedtime. And, try to have seasonal fruits if nothing else is on your mind. These are also the best foods to eat at night. You can eat mango, peaches, dates, or apples as per the availability. Eat fruits according to your Doshas for better results.

3. Lentils Are Digestive Foods.

Is eating before bed bad? Yes. Digestion slows down at night, leaving the waste stuck in the stomach. Therefore, lentils are a perfect choice. They are easily digestible, being amongst the best foods to eat before bed.

4. Dairy Products

Milk brings sleep but it also increases Kapha. Thus, Ayurveda recommends drinking warm milk with a pinch of turmeric powder. Curd is the worst food to eat at night. Replace curd or yogurt with buttermilk to support the digestive functioning.

5. Natural Spices

Spices like fennel, fenugreek, cinnamon, and cardamom are warming. They enhance the taste and flavor of the food. Add such spices to your dinner before eating at night. In case you want to know more about the best Indian spices, check them out here.

6. Honey

Ditch sugar, eat honey instead. Sugar is amongst the worst foods to eat at night. It is also antimicrobial in nature to remove dryness and congestion from the body. To know more about honey, click here.

7. Wheat Over Rice

Rice takes longer to digest as compared to wheat. Therefore, you can eat wheat chapatis with a bowl of lentils or cooked vegetables as the best foods to eat before bed.

8. Salt

Meals taste bland without salt in it. Studies show that excess salt in food increases water retention in the body. It can affect the kidneys in the long run. Hence, put less amount of salt in food for eating before bed but do not completely avoid it unless specified by a practitioner.

Ayurvedic Tips

  • Do not eat fried food. It can increase cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Focus on your food rather than watching TV or phone while eating at night.
  • Take food in an appropriate amount. Do not overindulge in eating before bed.
  • Consume Triphala Churna for better digestion.
