Gout is a kind of arthritis that can get extremely painful. This condition results from excess levels of uric acid in the body. This uric acid crystallises and gathers around joints, causing flare ups and pain. Your diet can do a lot to worsen or improve the condition. So, here is a list of foods to avoid with gout. We end the article with sharing some foods that you can also enjoy without the fear of a flare up. Read on!

Top 5 Foods To Avoid With Gout

1. Anything With Excess Sugar

Studies have found that people who eat a diet that is high in sugar are at a higher risk of developing this condition. Sweeteners tend to worsen gout in most people because they boost the levels of uric acid in the body. This can lead to painful flare ups. It also causes weight gain. So, steer clear of beverages that contain corn syrup. This includes fruit drinks too!

2. Meat

Ayurvedic experts recommend eating a plant-based diet. This holds special importance to those with gout. Turkey and goose, specifically, contain very high amounts of purines. That’s why you are much better off without these two foods if you suffer from gout. Other bad foods for gout under the meat section include liver, herring, sardines, red meat, and kidney.

3. Asparagus

Asparagus is also among the top foods to avoid for gout prevention and treatment. This is simply because it has loads of purines. But the good news is that high purine vegetables are not believed to be as bad for gout as other kinds of food. So while you should avoid vegetables like asparagus, cauliflower, and spinach, you can indulge in them every once in a while.

4. Alcohol

Next on the list of foods to avoid with gout is alcohol. In Ayurveda, alcohol classifies as a tamasic food and is therefore best avoided by everybody! But if you have gout, it’s an absolute must. Alcoholic beverages, especially beer, significantly increase the levels of uric acid in the body. They also make it harder for the body to get rid of excess uric acid. They lead to painful flare ups.

5. High Fat Dairy

Last on the list of foods not to eat with gout is high fat dairy, like cream and whole milk. These foods increase the risk of developing gout and worsen the condition in many people. But fortunately, there are tons of low fat options available. Low fat yoghurt, for example. Just make sure that you choose variants without added sugar.

What Can You Eat?

Does this mean that you aren’t allowed to enjoy healthy and delicious food when you have gout? Absolutely not!

  • Foods high in fibre like oatmeal, leafy greens, and nuts are great for you.
  • Potassium rich foods like bananas and avocados are good too.
  • You can also indulge in berries.
  • Feel free to enjoy all vegetables. Just limit spinach, asparagus, dried beans, and dried peas.
