Muscle Spasm Treatment In Ayurveda: Easy Home Remedies

Have you ever felt a sudden cramp in your leg or arms? Did you feel sudden body tremors? It may look like a part of your body twitching.  If so, then you have just experienced a muscle spasm. Do not panic…it is just an involuntary contraction of your muscle and will most likely go away as fast as it came. Yes it may have been painful, but it is not dangerous or fatal. Ayurveda has some easy home remedies for muscle tremors.

We’ll first tell you about the causes of the muscle spasm. They can be due to imbalances in elecrolytes, fatigue, dehydration, overuse, increased movements, extreme cold, and excess stress. In a muscle spasm is said to be caused by the Vata dosha and ama accumulation. It occurs when the muscles become stiff and hard, and therefore are unable to relax. Let us look at some muscle spasm treatment options that Ayurveda suggests.

Muscle Spasm Treatment In Ayurveda: Easy Home Remedies

1. Take Heat Therapy

Hot compression is a time-tested and easy, home remedy to treat muscle spasms. Apply a heat pack onto the muscle that is troubling you. This will bring instant relaxation to the muscle and relief from the tremors. You can also enjoy a nice hot bath with Epsom salt; this works wonderfully for relaxing the body and mind.

2. Massage Your Muscles.

Abhyanga means massage in Ayurveda. It is a sure shot treatment for spasms, aches, and pains. Gently massage the aching muscle with oil will help in proper circulation and in relaxing the cramped muscle. Further, such regular massages will ensure the spasm does not come back again. Here’s a detailed guide.

3. Relax With Teas.

Tea is a very easy home remedy for body tremors. Relax those muscle shakes with herbal teas made with ingredients like chamomile, peppermint, lavender, ashwagandha, comfrey, or turmeric. This will not only relax the muscles and reduce pain, but also soothe the mind. Moreover, the water content will rehydrate the body.

4. Try Aromatherapy.

Another easy way to reduce muscle tremors is with aromas of essential oils. When inhaled, essential oils help release tightness as well as tension from the muscles. This causes them to stop twitching. Essential oils also bust stress, which further loosens up the body. Some oils you can add to your diffuser are that of lavender, patchouli, sandalwood, lemon balm, frankincense, and chamomile.

5. Go To Sleep.

In most cases, taking a nap or having a good night’s sleep can make the muscle tremors go away. As the body goes into sleep mode, the muscles can naturally relax. And the body can carry out repairs in case there has been overuse of the muscles. Cortisol levels also reduce and thus help if stress or fatigue have caused the body tremors.
