Sandalwood or chandan is one of the most sacred herbs in Ayurveda. The Vedic texts tell us that  it is a symbol of holiness. It is said that it fragrances even the axe that cuts it. No wonder, the people of ancient India have held it so high in regard and used in all sacred ceremonies. But this amazing herb has many more uses than that. Go ahead and find out all about the sandalwood benefits in Ayurveda!

 Sandalwood Uses

1. Sandalwood Treats Pitta & Vata Skin Conditions.

Our dosha imbalances show on the condition of our skin. Sandalwood can treat those conditions naturally and effectively. A paste made with sandalwood powder and water soothes heaty Pitta problems of oily skin, acne, sunburn, rashes, and even ulcers. For those with Vata related skin issues like dryness, cracking, and flaking, sandalwood moisturizes and nourishes the skin – leaving it feeling fresh and soft.

2. Sandalwood Works As A Fever Remedy.

The cooling effect of sandalwood powder helps those with fever. It relieves body pain due to the fever, prevents excessive perspiring, and can help bring down the temperature too. You can also apply sandalwood powder paste to the temples or forehead to get relief from those terrible sickness-caused headaches.

3. Sandalwood Oil Is A Superb Perfume.

This is one of the most widely known sandalwood uses. The heartwood of the tree is powdered and steam distilled. The resultant oil then lends its fragrance to many kinds of products. If you love making DIY candles, soaps, creams or incense, go ahead and use some sandalwood oil for fragrance.

4. Sandalwood Soothes The Mind.

The scent of sandalwood calms the mind immensely. It immediately clears our minds and relieves stress and tensions. It enlivens the soul, and infuses a sense of happiness. If you face Pitta or Vata effects on your mind – restlessness, anxiety, anger, impatience – apply sandalwood paste onto your forehead. Or use it as aromatherapy. Thanks to its soul-cleansing effects, people apply sandalwood on the body before and after religious ceremonies.

5. Sandalwood Is Effective For Cough And Cold.

One of the sandalwood benefits lies in its ability to get rid of cough as well as cold. It is a natural expectorant with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. It helps fight those harmful viral infections and provides much-needed relief.

6. Sandalwood Benefits Growing Children.

Do you know that one of the sandalwood uses is that it is an excellent health tonic, specially for growing children? Sandalwood oil ensures harmony in the functioning of the three vital nervous, digestive, and circulatory systems. This harmonious balancing as well as smooth functioning goes to ensure good health.
