No matter how much you savor the aroma and taste of fennel, if your body is extra sensitive, you cannot include it in your diet! Fennel allergies are rare, but they do exist. And, if you are among the people with such a sensitivity, go for an alternative. Plus, what if you run out of the ingredient in the middle of a recipe? These substitutes for fennel come to the rescue!

The Best Substitutes For Fennel

1. Star Anise Is The Best Bet!

The best substitute for fennel is star anise, which can easily duplicate the flavor and also protect you from allergies. Ingredients like anethole and estragole give anise and fennel their unique yet similar taste. So, using star anise in place of fennel is a good option.

2. Delicious Dill Is Another Best Fennel Substitute

Easy to grow in your home garden, dill is another best substitute for fennel. In fact, prepare a dill leaf tea and you will not be able to differentiate its flavor from that of fennel tea. The aroma is similar to star anise. And, the only difference with dill is its strength, which is more subtle that fennel.

3. Powerful Parsley Is An Accessible Substitute For Fennel

When fennel is not an option for you to use, try adding the flavors of parsley. It is the most easily accessible substitute for fennel. Of course parsley isn’t an exact match, but it can still impart that lovely flavor of fennel seeds. Celery is, however, another alternative, but it can exhibit allergy causing properties!

4. Mexican Avocado – A Leafy Substitute For Fennel

The flavor might not be as strong as fennel, but it’s a decent alternative. And do not forget to choose the fruit and leaves that are organic to ensure utmost safety. And, a quick tip – before using the leaves of Mexican avocado in place of fennel, don’t forget to toast or grill them for a minute on both the sides.

5. Make Use Of The Benefits Of Bok Choy

Boy Choy is a bit stronger in taste than fennel, but it sorts the purpose. Both the ingredients somewhat have the same textures. And whether you use Boy Choy as a substitute for fennel or not, it still deserves a place on your plate.
