Bones, or ‘asthi’ in Ayurveda, form our body structure and give us a shape. But that is not all! They protect our internal organs, help us move, and are a storehouse of energy. Most importantly, it is in the bone marrow where stem cells that help fight diseases are produced. With such significant roles, let’s not take our bone health lightly. Bone strength is very important for our overall wellbeing. Now, we know that Ayurveda is all about balancing the doshas of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Asthi is related to the Vata dosha. So any imbalance in the Vata dosha will directly affect the bones.  However, we need not worry. Here are some tips from Ayurveda on how to strengthen bones.

How To Strengthen Bones

1. How Can Diet Help In Strengthening Our Bones?

According to Ayurveda, foods with air and earth elements are very good for bone health. Root vegetables and grains boost the earth element. Pungent and bitter foods boost the air element. So make sure your plate has these in appropriate amounts…along with other food for healthy bones like:

  • Leafy greens
  • Calcium-rich foods like milk and almonds
  • Citrus fruits
  • Flaxseeds
  • Yogurt
  • Walnuts
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Potassium sources like sweet potatoes and winter squash

All these are excellent bone strengthening foods.

2. How To Strengthen Bones Naturally? Take Sunlight.

Need a natural solution to your boost your bone strength? Enjoy some sunlight! The first rays of the Sun are packed with Vitamin D. Fractures and weak bones are not a problem for those who have had the privilege of basking in the morning Sun! Just so you may know why, Vitamin D amplifies calcium absorption and greatly improves bone health. So soak up the Sun!

3. Exercising Can Help Maintain Good Bone Strength.

With today’s busy schedules and lifestyle, it is true there may be no time for exercising. This causes our bone health to deteriorate. Choose easy exercises you can incorporate in your daily schedule…like yoga, brisk walking, stretching, skipping or swimming. Just make sure you are moving! Just like other machines, our bodies need to be oiled regularly with exercise. This is crucial for bone strength. And how do we do that? By making sure they are used sufficiently by bending, stretching, in some motion. Of course do not overdo it. Just exercise till you can feel that surge of energy and vitality rise up within your body.

4. Keep A Watch On The Sodium And Potassium.

Yes, salt does wonders to a dish. It can enhance it or ruin it. But just to satisfy your taste buds, do not play with your bones. A salty diet causes loss of calcium through urine excretion. Obviously, with this loss of calcium, our bone strength will deteriorate and they become fragile – leading to serious conditions like osteoporosis and other bone disorders. On the other hand, have more potassium rich bone strengthening foods like sweet potatoes, winter squash, and yogurt.

5. Don’t Drink And Smoke.

How to strengthen bones naturally? Maintain healthy habits. This Ayurvedic tip is not just for our bone health, but for our overall well-being. Bad habits such as smoking and alcohol destroy the body, including our bones. It causes free radicals to destroy bone-building cells, resulting in reduced bone density levels. It also releases cortisol, a stress hormone that weakens our bones. Alcohol does the same and also reduces hormonal levels of estrogen and testosterone. Result is very weak, fragile, and brittle bones.
