Black cohosh is a popularly used ingredient in dietary supplements. It helps treat women issues, particularly menopause. Black cohosh benefits are immense and it’s an effective health tonic. The roots of this herb have medicinal properties. However, the black cohosh side effects cannot be overlooked. So, here’s all that you need to know – what is black cohosh, what are its benefits, and all about the possible side effects.

What Is Black Cohosh?

This is a perennial plant botanically known as actaea racemosa. It belongs to the buttercup family and is native to North America. The plant is used to treat a variety of symptoms as well as diseases. Black cohosh benefits those with severe menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities. It is therefore used mostly by women.

Black Cohosh Uses & Dosage

  • Tea: Boil one teaspoon of black cohosh dried root in a cup of water. Cover the tea and let it steep for 5-8 minutes. Strain and drink twice a day.
  • Root Extract: The root extract must not be taken in more than 20-40ml in a day.
  • Tablet: The recommended dosage is 20mg twice daily.

Black Cohosh Benefits

1. It Deals With Women’s Woes.

Issues related to menstruation as well as menopause are curable with black cohosh. It is believed that black cohosh contains estrogen that subdues the symptoms of menopause. Therefore, the herb is known to increase fertility, making it a healthy and effective women’s tonic.

2. It Treats Diabetes.

High blood sugar is troublesome for each one of us. Diabetes affects all the human organs negatively, but black cohosh help regulate the levels. Therefore, you can drink its tea twice daily to manage the condition.

3. It Strengthens Bones & Muscles.

What is the black cohosh effect on bones? The herb reduces inflammation in the bones and therefore prevents further degeneration. Bone mass deteriorates with age and diseases like rheumatoid arthritis as well as joint inflammation. But, this herb can help prevent and heal it.

4. It Prevents Cancer.

Black cohosh uses its anti-cancer properties to prevent the growth of tumors. It kills free radicals that are responsible for cancer cell growth. Studies show that black cohosh benefits in the treatment of uterine fibroids. It also inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells.

5. It Aids Weight Loss.

Black cohosh benefits people who are overweight since it helps prevent further weight gain. Therefore, drink black cohosh tea for losing weight effectively. 

Black Cohosh Side Effects

Though the herb is safe for use, there still are some black cohosh side effects:

  • Diarrhea and upset stomach
  • Rashes
  • Liver damage
  • Infection
  • Breast pain/enlargement
