Motherwort Benefits & Side Effect: How Much To Use & When?

Leonurus Cardiaca is a Latin word meaning ‘heart of a lion’. It’s a herb more commonly known as motherwort. Belonging to the mint family, motherwort contains leonurine (a chemical alkaloid) that’s antispasmodic in nature. It helps in reducing muscle spasms as well as promotes healthy blood circulation. Motherwort benefits by cooling down the body with its anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, it is miraculous for women since it heals the reproductive system. 

Motherwort Uses & Dosage

Leonurus Cardiaca is used in different forms:

  • Tea – 3 cups daily with 1 teaspoon per cup.
  • Tincture – Around 3 ml of motherwort tincture is safe.
  • Tablet – 1 capsule is twice a day is usually recommended.

High doses of the herb without consultation from an expert are dangerous. Motherwort side effects may harm the body.

Motherwort Benefits

1. It Relieves Menstrual Cramps.

Motherwort heals menstruation as well as menopause. It reduces period irregularities and eases cramps. The herb increases the blood flow to the pelvic area. Menopause symptoms like hot flashes, anxiety and mood swings are also curable with this herb.

2. Motherwort Is A Natural Sedative.

Healers have been using motherwort for treating anxiety since centuries. People with insomnia benefit from leonurus cardiaca as it is a natural sedative. Therefore, it works to calm your nerves and relax the senses.

3. It’s A Cardiovascular Tonic.

As mentioned above, motherwort benefits by increasing blood flow in the body. A lot of heart diseases are a result of inadequate blood circulation. Studies have shown the effects of this herb on soothing heart palpitations as well as slowing down heartbeats. Therefore, motherwort is a potent cardiovascular tonic.

4. Leonurus Cardiaca Cure Digestive Issues.

Motherwort is an anti-inflammatory herb. It reduces burning sensations as well as acidity in the stomach. Flatulence is a cause of embarrassment, however, motherwort cures that too.

5. It Deals With Postpartum Complications. 

Motherwort is a herb popularly associated with women’s health. And, when it comes to new mothers, the herb is even more beneficial. Regular consumption can easily treat postpartum depression along with several related disorders. 

Motherwort Side Effects

Now that you are aware of the motherwort benefits, here’s the other side – motherwort side effects. While using a herb, you must ensure that consumption remains controlled. Here are the motherwort side effects:

  • The herb can lead to miscarriage. Do not consume during pregnancy.
  • The effects of motherwort on breastfeeding have not been studied properly.
  • Taking motherwort before or after a surgery can be harmful as it can cause excess sedation.
  • Do not take motherwort with blood thinning medications. It may cause bleeding.
